Welcome back after the summer solstice. Next year, because of our 50th, you will read '33 class notes in the September issue, describing happenings at our reunion. But it is hoped you won't have to read them — that you will have been a part of it. To encourage you to be there, 1 quote a "release" from Jeff Davis, who is chairing our 50th reunion:
"If you haven't already done so, mark your calendar that you'll be in Hanover June 10, 11, and 12 for your 50th reunion. The reunion committee is hard at work on a program that will be interesting, enjoyable, and relaxing.
"Our main quarters will be in Middle Mass, where all rooms have private baths. The overflow will be in Hitchcock. If you'd prefer to stay at the Inn, or its annex, 'The Lodge,' you'd best make reservations instanter as they are right tight. Another block of rooms (30) has been set aside for '33 in the Sheraton North Country Inn, West Lebanon (603/298-5906).
"The class of 1932 set a new 50th attendance record this June with 176 classmates present. We've set our goal for 185. Remember, June 10, 11, and 12, 1983: '33 All in Key for '83."
I had a letter from Wood Foster saying that he is 90 per cent retired, moving from partner to "of counsel" in his Minnesota law firm. He and Betty do a lot of traveling, skiing, and tennissing. Their daughter teaches skiing at Bromley. Woody hopes there will be opportunity for tennis with the like-minded at our 50th. Plans are in the works for extending our reunion with an optional stay at the Spalding Inn Club in Whitefield, N.H. It has been highly recommended and would permit such athletic pursuits on courts and links. These would be difficult to arrange in crowded Hanover. More on this later.
Head Agent Mannie Sprague wrote us all a "thank you" letter for our efforts in the Alumni Fund campaign this year. Our thanks go to Mannie, his assistant. Bob Niebling, and all of their helpers. In the 1982 campaign, '33 set a new record for giving by a class 49 years out of college. Even better, we showed an increase over 1981 in the number of classmates giving, despite the attrition in a group over age 70.
Last month you read of Phil Whitbeck's death on Flag Day, June 14. His wife Vail noted that he was very patriotic and said that he took pride that his birthday was on Veterans Day. She said that the last check he wrote before his death was to the Alumni Fund. He had his loyalties.
Names in the news: Bill Likoff, M.D., has been elected the first chancellor of Hahnemann Medical College and Hospital in Philadelphia. In that capacity he will continue to advise the new president and the trustees.
Hal Smith has moved up to chair the board and serve as c.e.o. of First Federal Savings and Loan Association of Waterbury, Conn. His son Jim '71 replaces him as president, and son Hal Jr. becomes executive vice president. Both younger Smiths had long lists of experience and appear eminently qualified. Nepotism applies only to nephews.
A long article in the Los Angeles Times of June 16 gave a big play to Paul Weston and Jo Stafford and the record albums they have made together as "Jonathan and Darlene Edwards, spoofing cocktail pianists and off-key disco singers. These albums are a big hit on the West Coast, issued on the Westons' label, Corinthian. Paul says he and Jo probably will get to Hanover this fall, but not for our mini-reunion.
Accompanying these notes is a picture of Jim Doherty and Lee Shaw holding the late Bob Doscher upside down. Our best guess is that, in the hard-time thirties, Bob had lost a bet and this was an attempted shake-down for the
payoff. Lee, who sent in the picture, has had three operations after an aneurysm of the aorta. He has had his car fitted with hand controls and gets about in that and a wheelchair, since he can't yet wear his prostheses. Despite all this he writes a cheery letter, but says, "Golden age? Bah, humbug!"
Jean Durgin asked me to thank '33 for the memorial book presented in Larry s name and also for the "compassionate attentions she has received from so many out of Dartmouth."
There are two opportunities for '33 get-togethers in November. There is a dinner at Boston's Sheraton on Friday night, November 12, prior to the Brown game, with President McLaughlin the speaker. Any news of a '33 dinner table will have to be found in Foxy's newsletter.
The Rugens will have their usual open house prior to the Princeton game, and cocktails afterwards, on Saturday, November 20. Please write or phone your class secretary a week before if you plan to be present.
That same person has been elected vice president of the Alumni Association of Dartmouth College for a year's term. He considers it an honor for '33 in our 50th year. Bless you all.
Lee Shaw '33 recently came across this vintagephoto, but he was unable to remember the circumstanceswhich led himself (right) and JimDoherty, also '33, to hold their late classmate.Bob Shaw, upside down. Class Secretary CarlRugen proposes one possibility in the '33column.
