First, I must express my deep sorrow and sadness over the loss of one of the Hanover/ Dartmouth community's true supporting members Jim Campion (no relatiofi), who died late last spring. Special thoughts to Dottie and her family.
On an equally sad note, I must relay news of Chris Wells's untimely death this past summer. 'Wellsey" had been working in San Francisco and was killed in a traffic accident on his way home from work. I believe that a memorial fund is being established in his honor, and I would refer all interested parties to Paul Krupka, Bill Swenson or Ted Winterer.
Fortunately, over the summer I have accumulated other items of interest and of a lighter nature. Several weddings number among these items. Thayer Wendell was wed in mid-September. She married Byron K. Adams Jr. of Princeton and Stanford.
Eleanor Shannon was also recently married, to David Salem, in Charlottesville, Va., on August 14. This fall Eleanor will be starting her first year at Harvard Business School.
Matt Gibb was married last June to Pam Hicks. They were married in Wolfsboro, N.H.
Congratulations to Jeff Sheean, who is now the proud father of Amanda Renee Sheean. Jeff and his wife Helen are now living in Florida.
News of Bill Kaewert comes from England, where he is doing research work for a Bostonbased consulting firm. He, foolishly I might note, invites any or all of us in London to stop in for a "stiff ale or two." Cheers, Bill! Bill will be moving to Geneva next winter and will open a Yankee Group office. His final bit of news he is engaged to Julie Wallin '81.
In a newsy letter from the Soviet Union, Margo Squire sent updates on many of her chums. Margo says that former sane person, M. L. Heslin, is now the only American representative aboard a Russian freighter. This ship is a fishing vessel and M. L. will be aboard it until the end of this month. Not just another pretty face out for a cruise.
Margo, somehow, also sends along reports on many others: Kim Donovan and Joe Henley are to be married in October; Eve Pratt Hoar has recently graduated from Stanford Business. School and is moving to Boston, where Jennifer Hughes is also working (consulting); T. R. Ryan has graduated from UVA Law and is in Kansas City; Da'aga Hill has just recently begun her work at UVA Law.
Margo has been working with the U.S. Embassy in Russia and will be returning (or has returned) to D.C. to start in the Johns Hopkins master's program in international relations. She thinks that Proctor Reid has recently graduated from the same program.
In her letter, Margo asked if I knew anything of Tom Bird's whereabouts. Unfortunately, I do. Young Tom is becoming a hospital supply mogul in Evanston, Ill. He is working for American Hospital Supply and is, he told me recently, "killing for quota." Atta boy, Tom. When he is not selling hospital supplies, or lending them to Chris Morris '78 for funny gags, Tom is riding his pogo stick up to visit me in Wisconsin.
Special congratulations are to go to us all. I recently received a copy of a letter from Alumni Fund Director Henry Eberhardt to our class fund leader, Peggy Epstein. We have recently broken the third-year-out giving record. Keep up the good work! Peggy is, in addition to breaking records, living with Michelle Kane in New York City.
Henry Eberhardt also sent official notice of the hiring of the Alumni Fund's newest associate director, Libby Roberts. Best wishes to her in her new capacity.
Michael Kelly sent me a very ambitious letter and I'll pass along some this month and some next. He is currently in London with the First Bank of Boston. He was in Europe (Arrezo, Italy) for the wedding of our very own Joseph Nastri. They understand Joe over there, and it is strange to find that they think that he is gentle, kind, and thoughtful. Joe is also at the First Boston, along with Rob Brace and Walter Malmquist.
