Sandy Bryan is a world champion. The 20-year-old Dartmouth senior was a member of the United States women's lacrosse first team that won the first Brine World Cup Tournament on September 25 in Nottingham, England. The U.S. team dropped its opening match to Australia, but then came back to avenge that loss in the championship finale. The U.S. fell behind the Aussies, 6-1, during the first half. Bryan scored the first goal of the second half, which ended in a 7-7 tie. She then scored two of the three U.S. goals in the overtime. Bryan, one of the youngest members of the 12-member U.S. team, scored 14 goals in the tournament. "Sandy is one of the most exciting lacrosse players to watch," said Dartmouth assistant women's lacrosse coach Josie Harper, also an assistant coach for the U.S. team. "She is very highly skilled, has incredible speed, and shows consistent improvement. She is one of the top 12 lacrosse players in the U.S."
The Ipswich, Massachusetts, resident plays the attack wing position and will cocaptain the Dartmouth lacrosse team next spring. She was a first team All-Ivy selection in 1980 and 1982 and was a member of the second All-Ivy team in 1981. She made the first New England team in 1980 and 1982-and the 1982 New England team was national champion. She made the 1981 U.S. Squad and the 1982 U.S. First Team.
