Shocking and bitterly unhappy news to report to you this month: Bob Pelren was shot to death on January 20 at his residence in the Virgin Islands by two masked intruders engaged in burglarizing his home. Bob and Anne had just returned from a morning swim. Anne was not injured.
The Pelrens had been dividing their time between their homes in St. Thomas and in Concord, where he continued his long affiliation with the Paine Webber brokerage firm on a part-time basis. The class extends its deepest sympathies to Anne and the family in these tragic circumstances. An obituary will appear in a later issue of the ALUMNI MAGAZINE.
George Munroe, who has done such great honor to the College and the class in his service as a College trustee in the past five years, has been nominated by the Alumni Council for a second five-year term. With the recent election of Bob Field as a trustee, our class may justly show the greatest pride in having two such devoted and talented leaders within the board of trustees.
George chairs the board and is chief executive officer and president of Phelps Dodge Corporation, a company featured in a Decemer 1, 1981, Forbes magazine article speculating on Phelps Dodge as a "takeover" possibility, as has happened with other copper producing firms. The article sees George as "studiously noncommital, but his demeanor makes it clear that the company is not on the bargain counter."
Congratulations to our adopted classmate Nancy Elliott, Director of Alumni Records, on the publication of the 1981 Dartmouth Alumni Directory. It's a mind-boggling compilation of data on more than 43,000 living alumni. If you haven't ordered your copy yet, get in touch with Nancy. She'll send you one at the usual zero discount for her classmates.
Three additions to the "I'm Sixty, Let's Relax a Little Club": Dustin Lewis retired from the presidency of the Edward R. Hart Company, following a heart attack a year ago which necessitated a four-month hospitalization. He's looking forward to joining us at the 1982 fall mini-reunion.
Frank Dain is planning on retirement soon from his medical practice in New York City "to the halcyon hills of North Carolina. Probably will find some part-time work. Main objective —to improve my golf swing. If it works, I may go on the tour!"
Having just retired from his New York law practice, Jack Meleney writes that he and Lil are "now happily established in Columbia, S.C., but will be up from time to time and hope to make the fall gathering" in 1982.
I reported last month on my talk with Charley Donovan. He was good enough to send me copies of his class notes from 15 years ago. That was back when Roy Watson was named "Hotelman of the Year," Ed Porter won a. tight contest for election to the Bangor City Council, and Jack Behringer was featured in a wire service release with his 36-foot sloop alongside his Florida waterfront home. Charley also reported on Ernie Sauls in Nuclear, N.M., where "Irma and he have been developing a process for expediting the hatching of chicken eggs. Everything in the broiler industry is automated except the eggs. If Irm and he can track that problem, they'll revolutionize the industry." Anybody heard from Ernie recently? Sure would like to know what (or how) he's hatching lately. If you've heard, let us know. Or even let us know what you are hatching.
