John C. Harned '50, formerly executive vice president and chief financial officer of the Penn Central Corporation, has been appointed the College's vice president for alumni affairs and development, succeeding Addison L. Winship II '42, who is retiring.

In making the announcement, President McLaughlin said: "We are extremely fortunate to have an alumnus of Jack's management and financial experience coming into a role that is so central to the College's future. Jack has compiled an outstanding record for 30 years in the private sector, and the challenges that lie ahead of us at Dartmouth will call on all his skills and dedication."

Prior to his association with Penn Central, Harned had been vice president for finance with St. Joe Minerals Corporation and was a founder and president of Bedford Advisors. He and his wife currently live in Katonah, N.Y., and have four children: Peter, 21, Dartmouth '85; Wendy, 19; Julie, 17; and Jim, 14.

"The Dartmouth alumni affairs and development position is the ultimate in that field in higher education today and, beyond that, I will be going back to my alma mater. I am very excited by the prospect," said Harned.

As an undergraduate at Dartmouth, Harned was active in student affairs as a member of Green Key, Palaeopitus, and the Undergraduate Council and as manager of the varsity hockey team.

Winship will be retiring after 25 years at Dartmouth in development and alumni relations work. As the College's senior development officer, he has guided the Third Century Fund and most recently the Campaign for Dartmouth, which achieved more than $204 million at the close of last year. [For a final wrap-up on the Campaign, see p. 82.] During his tenure, Winship also oversaw the building of Blunt Alumni Center.

"It has been a deeply rewarding quarter of a century working with so many wonderful alumni and friends. I am particularly gratified because so many care enough about Dartmouth to be concerned, involved, and understanding during a period of great change," stated Winship.

President McLaughlin added: "To many thousand alumni, Ad has been Mr. Dartmouth in their relations with the College. During his years in development work, Dartmouth has raised over $400 million in private source funds, a record unequaled in our long history and one for which we are all deeply grateful."
