Football: A tough finish

Twenty years from now, the 26 Dartmouth seniors who closed their careers, at Franklin Field in November will remember two Ivy championships and another that barely slipped away. The loss of seven starters and at least twice as many back-up personnel to injury gave the advantage to Pennsylvania as the Quakers won a 38-14 showdown on regional television. At the Yale Bowl in the 100 th meeting between Harvard and Yale, the Crimson prevailed. As a result, the Class of 1925 trophy emblematic of Ivy supremacy will spend the coming year in Philadelphia and Cambridge.

"It was a tough finish for us to go through,' said Dartmouth Coach Joe Yukica, "but this team gave us a chance." It did, indeed, as first team All-Ivy honors went to center Mark Pare (Burlington, Mass.) while second team recognition was voted to linebacker Steve Karol (Canton, Mass.), kicker Craig Saltzgaber (Ridgefield, Conn.), wide receiver Jack Daly (Peru, N.Y.), defensive tackle Andy Osman (Glen Head, N.Y.), and defensive back Don Pomeroy (Bozeman, Mont.). f fensive lineman Ike Schurman (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) earned honorable mention status while senior quarterback Frank Polsinello (Mechanicville, N.Y.), a thorn in the side of Ivy teams all season, was snubbed in favor of Columbia's John Witkowski, Princeton's Doug Butler, and Brown's Joe Potter. Pomeroy and tailback Richard Weissman (Sudbury, Mass.) will co-captain the 1984 edition.

"Under the toughest conditions, this team took us down to the finale," said Yukica. "The champion never lowers his head, and at Dartmouth, we are the home of champions."

Basketball seasons begin

The 1983-84 men's basketball team started the season with a stirring 81-67 win over Connecticut College as senior co-captain Brian Burke (Warwick, R. I.) hit his first 12 shots from the floor en route to 35 points. The schedule of three games in four nights took its toll, however, as Dartmouth dropped games to Holy Cross and Harvard before the exam break.

Denied the chance for another Dartmouth Invitational championship with an opening round loss to Vanderbilt, the women's basketball team regrouped for a nailbiting 63-60 victory over Marist in the consolation game and then downed Harvard, 56-46. The players would like nothing more than to present Coach Chris Weilgus with a fifth, unprecedented Ivy Championship as a going-away present come March. Weilgus, through superb recruiting and innovative coaching, brought the Green to the pinnacle in Ivy women's basketball, but will leave at the end of the season. She will join her husband, Chuck, at Hilton Head, South Carolina, where he is working as recreation director.

Hockey starts slow

The month of November is one that Coach George Crowe would like to forget. The Big Green men's hockey team had four games scheduled in November and came away without a single win. Games against the University of New Hampshire and Concordia of Montreal preceded the sixth annual Auld Lang Syne Classic on December 30-31. Dartmouth's 0-4 start is the slowest by a Big Green hockey team since 1970-71, but there are plenty of games left on the schedule. Even the NCAA-ECAC team of 1979-80 was 1-5 in mid-December before turning on the fireworks in January and February.

'83 Football wrap-up

VARSITY FOOTBALL (4-5-1 Overall, 4- 2-1 Ivy) September 17 • Dartmouth 21, Princeton 3 Junior Richard Weissman (Sudbury, Mass.) rushed for three touchdowns and 125 yards on 24 carries to open the 1983 season on a high note. Senior cocaptain Dave Fuhrman (Buena Park, Calif.) was in on 13 tackles as the Green defense held Princeton to just 201 yards of total offense, including a mere 55 on the ground.

September 24 • Army 13, Dartmouth 12 Dartmouth built a 12-0 lead before the half at Michie Stadium, but the Cadets rallied with two field goals and a touchdown for a comeback win in the first meeting between the two teams since 1954. Sophomore Craig Saltzgaber (Ridgefield, Conn.) set a Dartmouth record for most field goals in a game with boots from 27, 32, 32, and 37 yards.

October 1 • Holy Cross 41, Dartmouth 14 The bright spots in this loss to the Crusaders were the 207 yards passing by senior quarterback Frank Polsinello (Mechanicville, N.Y.) and 95 yards receiving by Polsinello's former Deerfield teammate, Jack Daly (Peru, N.Y.). Rover Mike Patsis (Nanuet, N.Y.) contributed 12 tackles including four solos, one quarterback sack, and a fumble recovery.

October 8 • William & Mary 21, Dartmouth 17 A touchdown with 49 seconds left in the game ruined the Green's hopes for a victory outside the league. But Polsinello hit 21 of 29 attempts for 239 yards and Daly caught 11 passes to tie a 29-year-old school record for most receptions in a game. And Dartmouth's offensive line gave Polsinello solid protection without giving up a single sack.

October 15 • Dartmouth 28, Harvard 12 Fullback Rich Lena (Woodbridge, Conn.) rushed for 108 yards and one touchdown and Daly snagged five passes for 110 yards and two scores. Sophomore Len Fontes (Strongsville, Ohio), filling in for an injured Dave Fuhrman, intercepted three passes to tie a Dartmouth record, and recovered a fumble to single-handedly stop the Crimson on four straight possessions. The game subsequently became known as "The Battle of Wounded Knee" as starters Fuhrman, Tom Broadhead (Harrison, Maine), and Joe Moore (St. Paul, Minn.) all underwent surgery the following week along with back-up lineman Brad Kliber (Missoula, Mont.).

October 22 • Dartmouth 31, Cornell 17 A second-half comeback featuring two touchdowns by Weissman and a 16 yard TD pass from Mike Caraviello (Medford, Mass.) to Mike Viccora (Bethel, Conn.) highlighted this 31-17 victory and solidified Dartmouth's hold on first place in the Ivy League. With 161 yards on 10 catches, Daly broke Dave Shula's record for career receiving yardage.

October 29 • Dartmouth 24, Yale 21 A dramatic 80-yard scoring drive gave the Green its first come-from-behind win in the Yale Bowl since 1965. With 47 seconds left, Viccora caught a 22 yard TD pass from Polsinello for the win. Grabbing key passes in the drive were senior Matty Lopes'(East Providence, R. 1.), sophomore Matt Burke (Abington, Mass.) and Weissman. Fumble recoveries by junior Peter Wade (Rochester, N.H.) and classmate Don Pomeroy (Bozeman, Mont.) helped the cause.

November 5 • Dartmouth 17, Columbia 17 For the second straight week, Coach Joe Yukica's troops needed a desperation drive this time to gain a tie against the Lions. Saltzgaber booted a 32-yard field goal on the last play of the game to keep Dartmouth in a tie for first place with Penn. Polsinello, despite recovering from the flu, had Dartmouth's second-best total offense day with 259 yards passing and 32 yards rushing.

November 12 • Brown 25, Dartmouth 7 Bone-chilling weather and four field goals by Brown's Chris Ingerslev did Dartmouth in, forcing the showdown at Penn the following week. But Polsinello went in the record book four times with marks for most completions in a season, most completions in a career, most yardage passing in a career, and most total offense in a season. Senior John Corbett (Denver, Colo.) recorded 12 tackles, including a fumble recovery, and junior Andy Osman finished with 11 tackles and a quarterback sack.

November 19 • Pennsylvania 38, Dartmouth 14 A span of 5:39 in which the Quakers scored three touchdowns devastated Dartmouth's hopes for an unprecedented 14th Ivy championship. Viccora caught two touchdown passes, however, the first a 79-yarder in which he grabbed the ball at midfield, lost his right shoe and continued unmolested to the endzone. "We thought we would be in the title picture this year," said Yukica, "and we were. Right until the end. That's about all you can ask for to come into the last game of the season and have a chance to win your league title."
