By the time you read this the worst will be over, but right now your faithful scribe finds himself mired in the middle of another breathtakingly bland Chicago winter. Although the local weather prognosticators are taking great pride in (and apparent credit for) the lack of meteorological disasters so far this winter, most denizens of Daley's Dogpatch would gladly welcome a blizzard, earthquake, or typhoon to break the monotony of endless gray days. Any of you who can confirm that the sun still exists please notify the over-signed at once.

Now, after that cheery kickoff, I'm pleased to report that the mailbag is doing quite nicely thanks to Class Treasurer Stefanie Valar and the notes she has forwarded. So without even nodding to the Prince of Blends (a.k.a. Sultan of Segues) let's go to the news.

John Keitt Jr. and his wife Diane are living in London, where he's with the U.S. law firm of Rogers and Wells. John was able to return to the States recently for two Dartmouth weddings: Tim MacManus and Amy Evans on September 25 in Scarsdale, and Dan Forsythe and Donna Rindfus on October 1 in Tonawanda, N.Y. John reports that both events were thoroughly enjoyable; anyone with further details is encouraged to file a report.

Dabney Hofamman writes from Birmingham, Ala., that he and his wife Leslie recently had their first child, Allen Nugent. Leslie and Allen are fine, Dabney's hurting. He'd like to hear from Chris Davis, Tom Souze, and/or Sandy Ward. I wonder if Sandy's related to a dancer I once knew, Sandy Beach? Have to consult with Jeff Little '75 on that.

Ed Waters is working as a consultant with McKinsey and Company in New York. He'll be taking on a partner in May when he and Valerie Anne Baldwin of Boston are married in Vermont. Then, as Ed puts it, they'll be "off to adventure together."

The always-gregarious Tom McConnell writes from someplace called Calypso Lane in San Carlos, Calif., that he's enjoying life in the Bay Area while working on new products at Apple Computer and competing in triathlons.

The Reverend Thad Bennett is associate rector of the Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd in Hartford, Conn., where he's become a member of a recently-formed ecumenical community group known as Pax Urbe. The group will live and work together while ministering to people in the surrounding neighborhood, which consists of both urban poor and new residents moving into rehabilitated properties.

David Morgana is working in the sales division of Kaiser Steel Corporation in Fontana, Calif., and living in an idyllic apartment that sounds a little like the Hotel California. According to David, his place is ideally situated four blocks from the end of the main runway at Ontario International Airport, which is nice because the planes wake him up in time to catch the full effect of exhaust fumes from morning commuters into L.A. and Orange County. (Hmmm . . . maybe sleet and snow aren't so bad after all.) David would like to hear from his old pal Kevin Gillis.

Yet another member of our class has been singled out for recognition. (No, Josh, being picked out of a pre-arraignment lineup doesn't count.) Rich Nichols from New Bedford, Mass., was named an Outstanding Young Man of America for 1982 by the organization of the same name which is affiliated with the United States Jaycees. Rich received a master's in education from Stanford after leaving Dartmouth and his J.D. from Hastings College of Law in 1982. He is also a candidate for a doctorate in philosophy. Rich continues the track exploits he pursued at Dartmouth. He went to Milan, Italy, last summer to represent the U.S. in an international meet. Congratulations, Rich, and continued good luck.

Lastly, word filters out of beautiful Greater L.A. (Lewiston-Auburn, Maine, for you geographic neophytes) that class first lady Pat Josselyn and head honcho Jay Josselyn are the proud parents of a new baby daughter, Kristen. Tom Reinhart has reportedly already booked Kristen for Winter Carnival of 2001. Tom's last date was sighted by the Space Shuttle crew passing the Fiji Islands heading full speed for parts unknown.

Till next month, take care. Over and out
