Greetings from the Grist Mill. Before any of you fall asleep, let me make a final pitch for the Alumni Fund. Regardless of your opinions on all the issues covered in the letters section up front, the bottom line is that the College is still a great place and that those of us who are fortunate enough to have gone there should help kids trying to afford it today. Without quoting all the statistics, I can say that a contribution to the Alumni Fund will help the College keep tuition down and, if enough of us participate, make it possible for someone to go to Dartmouth who otherwise could not attend. Finally, don't be selfconscious about the size of your check; as simplistic as it sounds, every little bit helps.
Headlining this month's news is Louise Erdrich's appearance on the cover of the March Alumni Magazine. The accompanying story chronicles her distinguished career and leads to the conclusion that we have got a serious talent on our hands. Despite the common belief that my reading is limited to a quick perusal of People in the checkout line and a sneaked survey of masterworks such as Young Girls Gone Bad in dingy bus stations, I can heartily recommend Louise's book, LoveMedicine, to any ,of you who enjoy good literature (not that you would read this column on that basis).
Also making headlines, Bill Koch's dad has changed his last name to "Coke Is It" to alleviate chronic mispronounciation problems. After weathering an early legal challenge from Goca-Cola on trademark grounds, Mr. Coke Is It is now busy having his checks reprinted. Maybe I'll try Marty "Tastes Great Less Filling" or some such moniker.
In a more traditional vein, Rachael Buchsbaum, a student at Cornell Med (notice the segue - vein to med school?) is engaged to our own Mike Arwe. Mike is a third-year law student at Brooklyn Law School. An April ceremony is slated.
Nuptials that have reached a more advanced state involved Jack Fiedler and JoLouise Allen of Brookline, Mass. Jack, former WDCR microphone magician, is a savings operations manager in Brighton, Mass.
Karen Turner checks in from the Big Apple to report that she's attending the Columbia School of Journalism after spending eight years in Chicago.
Steve "Hockey" Tompon joined forces with Susan von Hoffman (Colgate '75) in September 1984. Steve and Susan are living in South Orange, N.J. She is director of conference sales at Institutional Investor, and Steve's vice president at Prudential's corporate finance subsidiary.
Ann Fritz Hackett is doing well in D.C. with her husband, Lance, and new son, Conor, born in May 1984. Gary Slack and his wife, Kelly Fead '78, had a baby boy, Alex, the day before, in the same hospital.
From the Atlanta area, Paul Sanders III has joined Westcorp Mortgage as a senior loan originator. Paul is also pursuing an M.B.A. in finance at Georgia State.
Returning to our earlier medical theme, Dave Robbins checks in from Albuquerque, where he is in his last year of a urology residency. Dave's wife, Ruthie, is a full-time mother to Michael (four) and Amanda (two) and a part-time domestic relations attorney. Dave was expecting a visit from Brad Peck, who was traveling around the world between engagements at Harvard Law School and a San Francisco law firm.
Finally, Jonie D. La Bombard and Bill Noyce '75 announced the birth of Abigail on June 16, 1984.
That s it for this month. Keep me posted on your comings and goings, additions and deletions, etc. Happy summer. Over and out.
