Presidential Update

President McLaughlin, interviewed by The Dartmouth on February 7, said that he felt "terrific" as he continued to regain full activity after undergoing a minor heart operation at Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston, in January. The operation was an angioplasty, a new method of treating angina, and was declared a complete success. Shortly after it, the president made an alumni speaking trip to Florida and there had a chance to get some rest.

"Professor Foster, head of the department of history, has told me that at about the time of the close of my administration he called, in an examination on the colonial period, for a comparison of the early history of the college and its latest development. One student remarked incidentally, comparing Dr. Wheelock and myself, that both 'were gamblers by instinct.' I was as much pleased as amused by the insight of the student."
