As I was about to close the April class notes I read the lead editorial, "Hero and History," in The New York Times of March 4. Occasion: the 50th anniversary of the inauguration of Franklin D. Roosevelt, who as he took the oath of office said, "The only thing we have to fear is fear itself." The editorial says in part, "There's no denying that many Americans now suffer hardship and pain. But not the same fear. And much of the reason for that lies in what Franklin Roosevelt began 50 years ago." It says further that the United States was technically bankrupt, there was need for action, and F.D.R. embarked on such action quickly. "After weeks of tension, most people relished the novelty and excitement. And the decisiveness . . . Congress is now repairing Social Security, but compare that with inventing it."
How far away was Dartmouth for you in 1933? How far away was a college education? When you matriculated at Dartmouth in 1934 were you secure that you could find the means to see your way to 1938?
Ed Grace reports from St. Louis that he is currently a commission salesman for Grace Communications, with whom he expects to continue through 1983. Ed's new status permits bi-weekly golf with"the likes of Jim Jones as well as members of other classes." His son Warren is a member of the class of 1983.
Ed had occasion to talk with Byrne Logan when he was in St. Joseph, Mo. Byrne, a retired Air Force general, is still doing a bit of traveling. We'll catch up with him.
Pres Downer, poking around Jackson Springs, N.C., has "tangled with several members of younger classes (!) mainly because I still wear my Indian symbol green jacket around town." Arthritis is bugging his golf game, but he has a lost ball route which is proving very productive! He promised to send a sample of the Downer recycled ball, hit only once."
"Candid Camerer" by Dave Camerer '37 in The New Canaan Advertiser of New Canaan, Conn., of January 27 was an excellent article on Jerome (Brud) Holland, Cornell '38, who, Dave said, opened the doors to qualified black student athletes. Dave noted some '38ers, mentioning "Warren King taking an 11-yard touchdown pass from Fred Hollingsworth" and remarking at one point that "the giant Negro [Brud Holland}. . . caught Merrill Davis napping." It was my privilege to join Dave when he hosted Whitey Mays for lunch on an outing from the Veterans Hospital at Rocky Hill, Conn.
Bill Lyle of Amherst, N.H., is to be congratulated for his long, handwritten letter with information about himself, his family, and members of the class. Offering congratulations on my becoming class secretary he says, "I also recall writing the class newsletter in the forties when I looked forward, in vain, usually, for any bit of news about our classmates." Bill's career has involved Nashua Corporation, International Paper Company, and his return to Amherst, N.H., with the Universal Packaging Company. All of his career has been in the packag- ing field. Retired in 1981, he suffered a serious heart attack, but with new drugs manages to get in a frequent nine holes of golf. Bill report ed that Bob and Dottie Frese dropped in afttthe 1982 fall mini-reunion and that they had a very pleasant and happy play-back. Bill will be" at the mini-reunion in 1983. Bill and Betty managed to drive to visit family in Texas, Colorado, and Wyoming last summer. Take note Paul Thorpe. Seems to me that there is a spot for a planned Dartmouth tour to the Southwest to take in families and children of all '38ers
The weather, while not a subject for discussion, has favored some '38ers. Bill Fasolo, Jim Cooney, and Fran Reilly were reported cavorting on a golf course at Carefree, Ariz.
Fall mini-reunion: Dick Francis, who chairs the event, reports that it will be held on September 30 to October 2 (Holy Cross weekend), with base of operations at the Sheraton North Country Inn in West Lebanon. Great program planned. Bus on game day for all events: tail-gate at the D.O.C. House, the game, and a reception and smorgasbord (with dancing to Moreys Waves) at the Phil Leachs' in the evening. Dan Marshall will send out the details.
