Remember the fifth? Excerpts from the Alumni Magazine for August 1946, class secretary Don Stillman reporting: That terrific 5th is now history. .. . A'41 baseball team (emerged) as reunion champions . . . with the aid of fake Gidney's four home runs and the stellar play of the barefoot boys, May and Rainie .... Our class was headquartered in Mass Row and the beer tent was strategically located behind North Mass. . . . The class of '41 was awarded the cup for reunion attendance .... The eight men elected to the executive committee (were) Lou Young, Lew Johnstone, Dutch Cotton, ort cGinley, Stacy Hill, Snuffy Smith, Bob Thomas, Stu May, Don Still- man .... Weekend Highlights: Dick Hill's Dwight iske repertoire .... Georgie Seel, whose shirttail had us fooled for a moment .... Felix Lilienthal, whose birthday was Saturday night .... Bob O'Brien, Don Hanks, George Tamlyn, Bruce Friedlich, Bill Hotaling and probably others celebrating being brand-new papas.
Don't forget the 45th!
Found that while rummaging through the files this past summer. Thought it might set the mood for this coming season, which will climax in Hanover on June 10-12, 1985, with 1941's one-year-early 45th reunion. You'll be getting regular reports on progress and plans as the months go by, but mark your calendar now and keep the decks clear for that week.
Meanwhile, as you know, the mini-reunion is scheduled for Harvard weekend, October 19-21, at the Sheraton North Country Inn in West Leb. There's a fair chance that you'll be reading this before that happens; if so, and if you haven't already signed' up, come a-running.
I'm sorry to report that Robert A. Fisher died over the summer while vacationing in Florida. You'll find an obituary either in this issue or an upcoming one. And 1941's condolences go to Roger Epply, whose wife Pat died last May. Pat ran a specialty toy shop here in Essex, called "The Bear Tree," which was well known all along the shoreline.
A letter arrived from Don Stillman last spring, just too late for the final deadline of the season, so 1 hasten to pass on the highlights now: "We moved from New Canaan, Conn., to Tequesta, Fla., the end of 1982, as I semi-retired at that point ... a trip every six weeks to N.Y. and the rest handled in Florida. That was a nice transition, but since January I'm enjoying being fully retired, except for some real estate work here.
"Talked recently to Beanie Johnstone and Lew has been in and out of the hospital the past few months, but hopefully well on the road to recovery now.
"We're headed north to New Canaan for the summer, to see children and grandchildren, and expect to be back in Tequesta in October. Jan and Win Watson are our neighbors here, and we see Gus and Stew Broberg from time to time in nearby Palm Beach.
"Had a total hip replacement in February but am in great shape now. The doctor says no more tennis, which is disappointing. Guess I'll have to take up golf. Patricia joins me in sending our best."
I have a newspaper clipping here that begins: "John Wayne might have thought he had true grit, but he never met Martha Hill of Winter Park, Colo." Martha is Stace andKay Hill's daughter, Dartmouth '82. She lost a leg to bone cancer seven years ago, but she's still an accomplished skier. Stace writes: "Kay, older daughter Kadie, and I spent two weeks in Austria last winter to watch Martha compete in the Handicap Olympics at Innsbruck. She finished sixth in slalom, fourth in giant slalom, fourth in downhill and placed fifth overall. She skied very well for her first international competition. She went on to win a gold in both the U.S. Nationals and the Canadian Nationals later.
"After Innsbruck, the four of us had five days in Vienna together, an exciting and fun time."
Seen over the summer: Bill Broer, who has left the Microtech company in Cheshire, Conn., to go back into business for himself called Property Research of New England. He publishes real estate atlases, same business he was in some years ago .... Zeke Billings, who is making a spectacular recovery here in Saybrook, Conn., from last spring's spinal surgery. He's up and walking about, though still wrapped in braces and things .... DickKrolik, who was making a New England vacation tour and stopped off to join Barbara and me for lunch and a round of what we pretended was golf.
A reminder: About now you should be getting your first 1984-85 class dues notice from new treasurer Hugh Kenworthy. Pay 'em promptly and save the treasury second-notice postage. And be sure to send along some news for your friends.
