The Alumni Fund telethon this past summer gave me the opportunity to speak with a number of classmates from the midpart of the country: Fred Neumann is head of the department of accountancy at the University of Illinois at Champaign. In addition to his administrative duties, Fred teaches some classes. The three Neumann progeny are at school or working in the area. Bradford is working in Champaign; Carla is a senior at the University of Illinois; and Marshall is in junior high school. Fred has been at the University since 1965.
Ted Dunham is head of Technisort, a company he started in Cleveland in 1978. Technisort is the first-class mail presorting business with 11 centers around the country. Among its customers are many blue-chip companies like Time-Life, Reader's Digest, and Blue Cross-Blue Shield. Ted's avocation for 32 years has been flying. According to my dog-eared notes, he has a Cessna 210. His interest in flying has gotten him involved with a aeronautical museum of which he is a trustee. Joan is aiming for a degree in art history and towards that end was taking an intensive course in Italian in New Haven at Yale. The kids are equally doing their things with Karen (Smith '82) working for the ABA in Washington after having worked for the Common Market in Brussels, and Brian is at Dartmouth. Brian took a semester off from school to write and illustrate a children's book.
Another Ohioan is Bud Sawyer who is with the Ohio Historical Society in Columbus where he edits the monthly newsletter and handles the public relations. I just reread his notes in our 25th yearbook; they are great!
Dick Hollingworth is in Muskogee, Okla. He is in process development with Fansteel, an exotic metals business. Elizabeth is a teacher and was enjoying the summer at the time my notes were taken.
Norm Jeavons is an attorney in Cleveland who travels and goes spelunking in his spare time. Kathleen is involved in civic activities. Kathy '85 is a major in art history (does she have to take Italian at Yale?) and Lindsey is in high school.
Dick Little asked me to send him Charlie Blakemore's address, which I neglected to do. Rest assured, Dick, it's in the mail. The Littles live in Morgantown, W.Va. Dick is doing a research study of the upper Potomac basin which involves the social geography and political constituencies of the area. Margaret is an artist and a writer and is into historical research. Dick Jr. is in construction in North Carolina. Katherine is with a biotechnics firm in the San Francisco area, and Doanda is with a social agency in Indiana.
Ed Obendorf is in Cleveland, working for a company bearing his name. He covers three states, plying industrial valves and fittings to the first line of distributors. Caroline is involved in community affairs. Charlie '82 is teaching seventh grade history and English at University School; Michael is finishing up at Miami of Ohio (as is my Andrew), and Rob is a senior at University School.
My notes of my chat with Tom Allen look like some beer spilled on them; however, by piecing them together with the latest class address list, it appears that Tom is vice president of 12 group officfes of the Travelers Insurance Company. Tom and Carole live in Creve Coeur, Mo. When not ranging from Salt Lake City to Minnesota, Tom likes to play tennis. His stepdaughter, Lynn Duncan '77, is a geologist with Aminoil in Houston and stepson Warren Duncan works in New Jer- sey. Tom reported that he bumps into Bill Biggs from time to time. Bill is with Jones and Laughlin Steel.
In Motor City Craig Hausman is executive director of the personnel organization at Ford. In his spare time he and Lois are refurbishing the old house in which they are living. John received his master's in electrical engineering from Purdue and is working for TRW in L.A. Kristen, also an electrical engineer, is with IBM in Boca Raton, Fla. Bringing up the rear are Andrew and Douglas who are in high school.
Last but not least in the list of telethoners is Peter Henderson in Lakewood, Ohio. He is the executive director of the Cuyahoga Valley Communities Council, involved in city planning. Peter's job has been made more interesting by the national park that is being created between Cleveland and Akron which puts him in the middle of all the issues. Carl '81 completed his master's degree at the University of Michigan (in "geo," according to my notes). He is married and has a child. Jane is going to the University of Wooster, and Rob, 14, is at home.
John Rosenwald was the recipient of the American Jewish Committee's 1984 Herbert H. Lehman award in May. John was cited as an outstanding individual whose contribution to the cultural, philanthropical, and civic life of New York City enhances the quality of life in an open society.
Joe Baute was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters from Franklin Pierce College in Rindge, N.H. Congratulations to both John and Joe.
I received a long letter from Harvey Kelley. I'm over my word limit for this issue, so I'll save Harvey's news for next month.
On election day, remember to win one for the Gipper.
