This year's prognostication is that when you read this, mini-reunion will have been a raging success, and the football team will have lost only one game. I am ever hopeful, in any event. Speaking of sports£ you may have heard long before I did that the Summer Olympics were held in Los Angeles. Although we are sure to follow the Winter Olympics because of the regular participation by sons and daughters of Dartmouth, the Summer Olympics tend to get the short end of the stick. This year, however, the Olympics Organizing Committee was fortunate enough to have a Dartmouth sister team Carlie Geer 'BO and our own Judy Geer.
Both sisters are rowers. Carlie competed in the singles, while Judy rowed in the doubles boat. Judy had rowed in the 1976 Olympics, and, unfortunately, was unable to row in 1980 because of the boycott. This year Judy and her partner, Cathy Faxton, worked their way to the finals and finished sixth overall. Nice going, Judy. Sister Carlie won the silver in singles and could be looking towards 1988. Although some sources suggest that Judy may go into retirement, the following quote from The Valley News indicates quite the opposite: "I'm looking forward to doing other things for a change, like riding my bike and running. This fall, maybe I'll do a couple of triathlons." If that's retirement, I've been in a coma.
Turning to news of the pea green variety ... Fall brings freshmen send-off parties. We had our usual here in Hartford, and I had the opportunity to catch up with Pat and Gib Palmer and their two little ones. Gib assures me that his summer club swinging was measureably better than his fork work on the grill. A great crop of '88s were in attendance, as well as some potential '89s.
I also had the opportunity to touch base with one of my old Minneapolis cronies. Tom Dennison and his wife Jean are doing well and expecting a little Dennison in January. Jean is apparently a real estate sales addict and may not find time to go to the hospital because of her listings. Tom and Jean were unable to attend reunion (boo... hiss), but for a worthwhile cause. They were in attendance at the weddings of Scott Mosenthal and Bill Zorri, in August. Both of these weddings were attended by many alumni I am hoping someone will send me the details, such as the names of the brides.
From the capacity utilization department comes news of Charlie Solberg's fourth child a boy, I believe. Charlie undoubtedly wants to ensure another generation in Hanover. I hope you all have pleasant holidays, and I look forward to seeing you in Hanover or elsewhere. Please send me a Christmas card with any news about you or your classmates. Until January, happy holidays.
