COVER George Ticknor's watercolor of Dartmouth Hall executed when he was an eleven-year-old sophomore at the College anecdotally captures the Green in 1803. Perhaps unwittingly identified by Ticknor as a "view of the principle Buildings of Dartmouth University," his delightful prospect obliquely comments on the manners of a genteel college scene, complete with a solitary scholar, boys chasing each other, gentlemen with their ladies, and that ubiquitous figure of civilized life-the dog.
