"Our dear friend" was the way Eleazar Wheelock described his benefactor and New Hampshire's last royal governor, John Wentworth. The portrait by Copley is a new and major addition to the Dartmouth collection. Apparently, the College once owned another work by Copley—a portrait of Lord Dartmouth—but around 1826 it "disappeared."
