Tony Horan has left the Big Apple for Marshall University in Huntington, W.Va. He writes, "I have accepted appointment as associate professor of surgery (urology) at the new Marshall University School of Medicine. The medical school, and the state, remind me of Dartmouth. Indeed, the chairman of surgery pretty much nailed me down by revealing that he had filled out an application form for Dartmouth. Ultimately, he could not attend because of the Great Depression, but it was evidence that he and I would get along.

"Academically, I am working on the premalignant changes in carcinoma of the prostate, not a concern in our age group, but a concern in our fathers' age group.

"From a liberal arts perspective, I have shown abstract, acrylic 'puddle' paintings at the Century Club amateur show in New York as well as at the New York Physicians' Art Show at the New York Academy of Medicine."

Tony added, "My English major seems to show up in a real pleasure in contemporary comic novels. For all '61s who are feeling the weight of the world, and squeezing through some narrow passage (a la Gail Sheehy), I recommend Modern Baptists for a good laugh in the second half of the book."

The new listing of Dartmouth College alumni officers is out, and once again, we've got quite a list of '61s serving in club leadership positions. Among the presidents are Phil Oehler (Orange County), Pete Stuart (Southeastern Connecticut), Noel Kuhrt Jr. (Wilmington), David Cook (Grand Rapids), Mark Grady (Kansas' City), and Tom Allen (St. Louis). Club Secretaries: Ray Blanchard (Rochester, N.H.) and Steve Kirschner (Utica). Treasurers: Lee Heap (Richmond) and Bob Mclndoe (Providence). Liaison officers: Bob Rentto (San Diego), Bill Blue (Louisville), John Damon II (Cape Cod), Vic Rich (Westchester County), and me (Charlotte). Alumni Councilor Mike Murphy is continuing education officer for the Dartmouth Club of Central Florida. And Oak Winters has just become vice president of the Charlotte Club.

There are also several serving in the enrollment superstructure, with John Henry serving as an area enrollment director, and JohnDamon, Vic Rich, Bill Blue, and Bob Rentto serving as district enrollment directors in addition to their club responsibilities.

So we are contributing our time. And speaking of contributions, Alumni Fund chairman Joel Portugal asks that I remind you that the time is drawing near for the deadline for the 70th Alumni Fund. The goal is $10.3 million with 70 percent participation. That's for money.

Several months ago, we published an obituary for David Pullen. His mother, Mrs. Howard (Helen) Pullen of Battle Creek, Mich., writes that the date of death given was in error. "David died on May 25, 1983 (not 1980), in Tucson, Ariz., at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base Hospital, after a short illness caused by rapidly-spreading cancer. His base headquarters and home were in Tucson. His wife, Jo Ann Emerson Pullen, had lived in Coolidge. She now lives in their home in Tucson. David retired as a major just before he died. David was the last of the Pullen family men to graduate from Dartmouth. His uncle, Sherman John 'l8, his father, Howard James '20, and now our David. They all loved Dartmouth and were so loyal."

We're sorry about the error. It's also a reminder, friends, of our steadily advancing age. We still consider ourselves young, but we're, not so young anymore. Pause a moment to look at the necrology at the back of our new class directory and then resolve not to wait to call that classmate. And to attend our 25th in 1986.

Jerry Akin writes from Omaha: "It's been a long time since you, your cello, and I shared a ride from Hanover to Chicago." (I still have that cello, but the 1954 Chevy died an untimely death in 1963 when four of its six cylinders failed.)

"After I left Dartmouth, I got my graduate degree in chemical engineering at the University of Arizona. I've worked for Du Pont and Allied Corporation and have spent the last 15 years with Inter North. A lot of that time was spent traveling overseas on business; I once ran into a fellow lowan from the class of '59 at the American Embassy in Jakarta who also shared that holiday trip west. It's a small world.

"I couldn't talk my oldest child into attending Dartmouth (she's a freshman at Carleton this year), but the younger two are showing promise."

Jerry enclosed a press release showing he had been named vice president of the administrative services division of Northern Natural Gas Company, an Inter North subsidiary. His job includes responsibility for public and government affairs, strategy and project development, employee relations, and data processing. At Inter North he had been director of corporate engineering planning and director of chemical engineering.

He said, "It's a lot different from designing and building chemical plants, but nevertheless very interesting. As you would expect, we have a massive computer operation. I sure wish the Kiewit Center had been completed in 1957."
