A national dinner, sponsored by the Dartmouth Alumni Association of Eastern Massachusetts, was held at the Westin Hotel in Boston on April 27 to honor outstanding Dartmouth athletes. It was named "The Wearers of the Green" and paid homage to all members of championship teams, Olympians, national champions, ail-Americans, Hall-of-Famers, and captains of varsity teams from 1867 through 1984. President David T. McLaughlin '54 was the principal speaker.
More than 1,150 Dartmouth people from all over the country attended. Of course the greatest Dartmouth dinner party ever was the one given in honor of our beloved President Emeritus Ernest Martin Hopkins, when 2,200 people took over the Waldorf-Astoria in New York City on February 5, 1958, to celebrate Hoppy's 80th birthday.
Eight '2Bers attended the April 27 party: three members of the famous 1925 national championship eleven —, Red Fauntleroy,Jack McAvoy, and John Phillips; tennis captain Jerry Sass and Rachel, who flew out from Los Angeles; Bill and Bobby Morton, whose son Bill '59 played halfback on an Ivy League championship team; and Mutt Jennings, who swam on the freshman and varsity swimming teams.
At the annual Class Officers Weekend, class president Rick Rickenbaugh ran a tight meeting and covered a long agenda in two hours Friday afternoon. Reporting were treasurer Craig Haines, bequest co-chairmen Jack Kerierson and Curly Prosser, class agent Ed Flanders, mini-reunion chairman HerbSensenig, your secretary, and Mutt Jennings from the executive committee, who gave a report on the "Wearers of the Green" dinner. Herb emphasized the importance of writing the manager of the Norwich Inn in June or early July for reservations for the '28 minireunion weekend, September 28-29. The game on September 29 will be against the University of New Hampshire. Art Kneerim will also remind you to get your reservations and checks in the mail to Norwich promptly.
Dotty Lathrop wrote me a note, saying she will be at Nantucket sometime this summer and will get to Hanover from there. She has sent a check to Doug Tidd at the Norwich Inn for her mini-reunion reservation.
We just iearned from Betty Dietz that her granddaughter, Karen Dietz of Tacoma, Wash., became the third member of Dartmouth '88 in January by the early acceptance route. Her father is Peter Dietz '57.
At the class officers meeting Rick passed me the news that his grandson, Bart L. Rickenbaugh, a student at Andover, will also be entering Dartmouth in September. The College does not send out the news of acceptances of grandchildren, so please write me.
Gayle Leslie hosted a party in April at the Tucson National Golf Club for Frank Logan '52 of Hanover and Jim and Cynthia McConnon. Gayle says he was amazed at the lack of cocktails consumed and wonders if we just can't take it any more.
This is a last-minute reminder in case you get it before June 30 to send your check for the Alumni Fund to Hanover.
All for now. Have a wonderful summer.
