The twentieth annual '28 fall reunion at the Norwich Inn turned out to be a great warm-up for the 50th reunion next June 9-11.
Members of the large reunion committee arrived Thursday and Friday and met with chairman Bill Morton, who wielded the gavel all of Friday afternoon until all the plans were settled for "The Last Hurrah."
A fact sheet with all the details about the 50th will be mailed about October 15, along with two brief questionnaire cards. Both should be returned immediately - one addressed to CurlyProsser and Herb Sesening to bring up to date the attendance plans and the other addressed to me to get the bare minimum of information needed for the class directory: addresses (if you have more than one), wife's name, and nicknames for both of you. A personal plea - please, each of you, send your card to me so the directory will be complete and accurate. Vice president and reunion committeeman JohnPhillips, head honcho of the Vail-Ballou Press of New York, has offered to foot the bill.
Everyone donned his or her rain gear before going to the game, but fortunately the rain stopped just as the game started. The Big Green defeated Princeton. Friday night six carloads of '28ers found their way out Beaver Meadow Road in Norwich to Herb and Mimi Sensenig's house and enjoyed their hospitality.
Saturday after the game we had our usual dinner party in the Norwich Inn. Sixty '28ers, wives, and children were present: Ollie Andrus, George Bell, Cal Billings, Ken Cudeeback, George Davis, Skip Drayton, George Emery, Craig Haines, Ham Hankins, Jack Herpel, Red Jenkins, Jack Kenerson, Bill Lary and son Bill Jr., Makie Makepeace, Mac MacEachran, Bill Marx, Bill Morton, John Nixon, Barney Norton, Hammie Hammesfahr, John Lawrence, Wes Patience, John Phillips and guest Dick Thompson, Penn '28, Dottie Russell, Red Sanborn, Herb Sensenig, Os Skinner and son Scott and his Mary, Joe Tidd, John Stone, and Wes Wood.
Ham and Anne Hankins' son Timothy '62 and Mary Nutt, duaghter of Mr. and Mrs. David Nutt of Etna, N.H., were married October 1 in Rollins Chapel. Tim and Mary met in Puerto Rico, where Tim is a radio astronomer and works at the world's largest telescope in Arecibo. Tim is one of the world's experts on pulsars. (Ham told me, but you'll have to ask him what they are or look it up.) Tim and Mary will spend the next year working in Bonn, Germany.
Red Jenkins attended his 11th Alumni College in Hanover last summer and recommends it highly to all of you.
Art Hassell and Mrs. Burr Linden Chase announced their marriage September 24 in Madison, N.J.
Myles Lane's wife Maggie is receiving an award from the American Needlepoint Association of America on October 15 in Boston. Two years ago Princess Grace of Monaco received the same honor. Myles says he will be able to get away in time to see the Dartmouth-Harvard game that afternoon.
Speaking of awards, Creighton Hart of Shawnee Mission, Kans., one of the leading philatelists in the country, won two major awards at the International Philatelic Exhibition in Philadelphia. One was for the first issue of U.S. stamps, on which he received a large gold award. His second gold award was for franks of the U.S. presidents, presidential widows, signers of the Declaration of Independence and presidents of the Continental Congress. Creighton also exhibited the frank collection in Milan, Italy, where he received a gold medal also. He takes in one or two major philatelic exhibitions a year now, and those are his vacations.
One of the founders and one of the oldest benefactors of the Cardigan Mountain School, Canaan, N.H., Jack Kenerson, was honored on September 23 at the dedication of the Kenerson Athletic Center. Following the ceremonies in the main gym room of the new complex, Jack, Fran, and all the Kenersons (three generations) moved on to a buffet luncheon in the dining room. Herb Sensenig, an invited guest, wrote. "The new gym is a beauty and the location of the school, looking east across the lake to Mt. Cardigan and west to Vermont hills, is stunning."
Our sympathy goes to the families of three classmates who have passed on: Harv Fisher,Rem Kinne, and Hank Walker.
Get busy with your plans for the 50th - and don't forget to mail the two questionnaire cards you have recently received.
