Speeding along the French countryside on the TGV en route to Portugal via Avignon and Barcelona, it's difficult to imagine that so many '85s are working! It's only August 7 (this column is written more than two months before publication, so please excuse the often not-so-up-to- date news), yet some classmates are already adjusting to the 9:00 to 5:00 — or is it the 7:00 to 7:00 — routine.

JoAnn Shannon didn't get any rest or relaxation following graduation. She left for New York City on Monday, June 10, to begin a 15-month master of science in accounting program at NYU — a must for all "Big Eight" public accounting firm employees. In September, she starts working at Arthur Young. Jackie Miller hustled to Houston to be at First City National Bank for her June 17 starting date. Not much of a vacation! Jackie plans on living at home until she finds an apartment.

Justin Rutan has an interesting job. He's a programmer/analyst with GTECH Corporation in Warwick, R.I. GTECH designs and sets up lottery systems for states and countries.

JoAnna Tsiantas had a few words to say about her lack of a summer vacation. She writes, "This summer I will be working. Yes, Sally, working. I start my real-life career as a systems consultant in Boston on July 1. I can't wait for our first minireunion!" Where is JoAnna's apartment? On the corner of Dartmouth Street and Newbury Street, of course. Veronica Jenkins spent four weeks at home before starting her job at Bamberger's in New Jersey on July 8. Keith Groggin is working somewhere in Bolton, Mass., while living in Allston.

Jim Kreitmari took two weeks in Acapulco before striking out on an entreprenurial business endeavor with a friend, "marketing several items." Starting this fall, Jim will be working in the investment banking division of Manufacturers Hanover by day while taking business school classes at Columbia by night.

Speaking of Columbia, congratulations to Valerie Hartman, better known as VaLAWrie. She will be attending Columbia Law School instead of Georgetown, where she had previously planned on going.

After a month of travel in California, Chris Gill moved to St. Louis, where he'll be a research assistant for Price Waterhouse in strategic management consulting. Hui-Lin Shiau was home this summer, working in a law firm.

JoAnna Papadakos will settle into a "more permanent" job with a business brokerage in Cambridge, Mass., after a very busy summer and fall. First JoAnna opened her dad's new Greek restaurant in the Tampa, Fla., area. She then started working as a national consultant for Delta Phi Epsilon Sorority, Inc., a job which lasted until May. As of August 19, BethGilman is in NYC with Chemical Bank. Also at Chemical are Pres Romeyn, Robbie Clements, and Lionel Conacher.

Mike Balmuth taught tennis at Tripp Lake Camp in Poland, Maine, until his "real" job started in late July. He is doing technical marketing in Albany, N.Y., as a systems engineer for IBM. James Evans worked at home before his job began. He's working for a small consulting firm in Wayland, Mass:, called lAMCO, Inc.

Karen McGaffey spent her summer teaching high schoolers how to be better . debaters. Her job is with High School Debate Institutes at Northwestern University and University of Louisville. Kathy Reilly ran one last summer of "Camp Reilly," though a name change for the camp was considered!

Several '85s have full-time grad school plans. Kathy DeLello spent the summer working in the customer services department at Boston Mutual Life, an insurance company in Canton, Mass. She begins a two-year master of science in teaching program at Boston College which starts in September. Lance Portland prepared for the rigors of Thayer School this summer while working as an intern for Eastman Kodak in Rochester, N.Y. Ken Jones, Dave Hallagan, Brent Marion, Fred Spencer, and Fran Swift have different ideas on how to prepare for Thayer. They lived together this summer and spent their time "just catching some rays and watching submarine races at the Beach Club."

While most of us were starting our lives away from Hanover this summer, a few '85s never left. Robert Raskin waited on tables at the Hanover Inn while MelanieDoyle was a "waitron" at Bentley's. Melanie also taught French for the Alumni Language Program. And, in her spare time, she researched careers at CES!

On a sad note for all you 5 Olde Nugget Alley lifetime members (you know who you are), the post-Dartmouth Night Weekend meeting place will have to be changed. Five Olde has been sold and is soon to be a Mexican restaurant. You'd better start acquiring a taste for margaritas!

I hope you all have enough time, despite your new jobs, to take a few minutes to drop me a line! Good luck, and keep up the good words.

The gown was traditional ivory satin with lace, pearls, and a cathedral-length veil; themen's garb was traditional white tie and tails; an increasing tradition is the joining inmarriage of two Dartmouth alumni, in this case Jennifer Reinert '84 and David Townsend'81, in Boston in May; and the less-than-traditional wedding pose was occasioned by thecompany's singing the very traditional "Men of Dartmouth."
