Reporting from a vacuum is a challenge. Alumni Magazine lead times require class notes be submitted six weeks prior to the month of publication. Thus, I sit at my word processor on September 6 without the benefit of any input from classmates. Please drop me a line to let me know what's happening in your life.
In case any of you who missed the various "Musings" deadlines wondered why your late input didn't get into print, the answer again has to do with lead times. The mechanical went to the printer on February 12. However, the late entries I received do provide some grist for this column.
Steve Gell sends greetings from the nation's capital. "Give a holler when you're in town or on the way. Ever since my son moved to the basement, we have had a guest room." Steve is currently serving as chief, land use section, for the District of Columbia government. I didn't know there was any land available in those parts! Marty Kraidin has a dental practice limited to periodontics in North Miami, Fla. His son, Jonathan, is Dartmouth '87. Walt Sosnowski is coping with the building glut in Dallas where he is an independent broker in industrial real estate. He and Doris, the "Polish princess," have a semi-empty nest with Walt and Tie in college and only Stephanie at home.
Mark Hinshaw has been teaching at Michigan State for the past 13 years. "As associate professor in the department of psychiatry, my major responsibility has been to develop and implement teaching programs for medical students, general psychiatry residents, and child psychiatry fellows in the Grand Rapids area. . . . Despite little time in which to publish, I have thoroughly enjoyed my involvement with academia." On the other hand, RickGuilford writes from his farm "about 30 miles outside Lansing toward Grand Rapids," that he is spending more time writing. Apparently his law practice in Lansing doesn't suffer. Says Rick, "I never see any of our classmates; there are none in the Lansing area. ... I had to choose this year between our 25th reunion and a writers conference in the Leelanau Peninsula of Michigan. That Dartmouth lost probably shows that I'm making some progress in personal decision-making. I shall write a poem as I think of you and make plans to make the next big one." Which one of you guys is going to get on the phone first? With this column behind me, I can now resume packing our underwater cameras, strobes, lenses, brackets, SCUBA gear, and two bathing suits in preparation for an early A.M. departure to the Caribbean.
