At the time of this writing, plans for THE BIG FIVE-OH are moving along at a good fast pace. A record-breaking 364 people have so far indicated they definitely will be in attendance, and this is only February! By the time you read this, you should have everything planned to make this a very special, once-ina-lifetime return to Hanover. Consider, too, the post-reunion holiday at the Spalding Inn, which also is attracting a record number of classmates, wives, and families.
By now you have received the up-to-date 1935 class directory. It is the hope of your executive committee that you are using it to contact friends from the past with whom you may not have been able to stay in touch.
Once more I want to call your attention to three exhibits being planned by our reunion committee for THE BIG FIVE-OH. Polly and I had dinner with Howie and Mary Croninger recently at a favorite Hanover eating place. Howie is collecting memorabilia but tells me returns so far are somewhat disappointing. Please check out your attic and desk drawers for treasured relics from 50 years ago. Write Howie at RFD Box 525, Lyme Center, NH 03769, and tell him what interesting things you can send or bring!
Bumped into Bob Hage, hard at work at his information desk at Mary Hitchcock Hospital. He and Henrietta had recently returned from a sojourn in Hawaii. Bob is collecting books authored by classmates to be displayed next June in a special room in Baker Library. Contact him at 9 Tyler Terrace, Hanover, NH 03755 with any ideas!
The local press reports that Maury Rapf, adjunct professor of drama (film) and acting director of film studies since 1973, is retiring. This presumably gives him more time to devote to his 1935 volunteer project. For display at our reunion Maury is. assembling videotape footage of film you may have of past events in the history of 1935. Contact Maury through the Film Studio, Box 6091, Dartmouth College, Hanover, NH 03755!
Among the numerous wearers of two Dartmouth hats is, as you've read, our reunion chairman, Don Radasch. As Alumni Coordinator of the Athletic Sponsors Program he was on hand with Coach Joe Yukica and Athletic Director Ted.Leland to host a dinner for sponsors and visiting scholar athletes. Among the numerous sponsors present 1935 was represented by Don, of course, YankPrice, and your secretary. We urge you to consider supporting this rapidly growing effort.
President Dave McLaughlin has announced the appointment of our adopted classmate Peter Smith to chronicle the official history of the administration of John Sloan Dickey, Dartmouth's 12th president. Peter is quoted as follows: "President Dickey is one of the most remarkable and widely admired men in the history of the College, and his presidency brought about such significant change in the institution that the work of recording it is a privilege that I look forward to with very great pleasure."
Jack Dodge, from Battle Ground, Wash., was good enough to send me an excellent photo and a clipping of Fred Haley, authored by the Associated Press, as it appeared in newspapers out there. We have written before of Fred's almost full-time attention for two years as chairman of a temporary committee on Education Policies Structure and Management. Yes, Fred and Dottie will, of course, be in Hanover for THE BIG FIVE-OH. Jack and Olivia hope to make it, too, if their plans can be arranged.
Bill Mathers writes he has been very busy moving from his large home of 35 years and trying to get his eldest son released from detention (not jail) in Vietnam for sailing an 80 foot schooner too close to Vietnam's claimed territorial waters. We assume the problem is solved, and Bill, Myra, and their daughter will be on hand at the 50th!
Art Sammis in Holmes Beach, Fla., writes the surprising fact that he never sees anybody from '35. Hope some of you down there can correct, that situation and persuade Art to be among us in June!
George Cook in Miami has been doing extensive traveling in the last few years to places such as China, South America, the Greek Islands, Egypt, and Israel and, just recently, Scandinavia. But he has not yet shown his wife, Lorraine, "the beauty of Dartmouth!" He's finally going to correct that in June!
Cards from both Larry Sommer and BobBowman tell of a reunion of the two for the first time since 1935. Bob, from Lincoln, Neb., visited with Larry and Trudy in Mendocino, Calif., while on a driving trip.
Chuck and Carol Gillan, new hip and all, will be in from Houston, as will Ed and LynnGerson, all the way from New York!
Jack and Eleanor AuWerter, like many of us, have been bitten by the travel bug: they went to Aspen in January and plan on Captiva in April and you-know-where in June! Gene and Bea Burnkrant in Arvada, Colo.,
travel a little but mostly "relax, walk, and swim." Son Bob is professor of marketing and director of the Ph.D. program at Ohio State. Son Dick is an environmental specialist with Western Power Association.
We get a Los Angeles report once in a while from Rudy Pacht. He and Helen have dined recently with Lou and Harriet Bookheim and also with Charlie and Phyllis Nayor, in L A. to visit their daughter, Nancy, who is "big in the casting business." They see Jim and Marion Berkey about twice a year, "en route to or from somewhere," and also Ed and SaraRamsey at a Dartmouth event in Newport Beach.
Art Flinner writes from Baltimore that though retired since 1979 he is very active. Among other things he's chairman of the Speakers Bureau of the Maryland Historical Society, curator of the Maryland Artillery Museum, and director of the National Guard Historical Society. Art says he hasn't seen a '35er since our 25th, but he and Margery will catch up in June! Be sure you do, too!
Late word! President Len and Ada Bryant are celebrating the arrival of their 10th grandchild! Eric Bryant Young will return shortly to Pakistan with parents Laurie and Bill.
