Did you read in the drama section of the New York Times of Sunday, March 23, about the Pilobolus dance troupe? You should have, for then you would know what Dartmouth can do in the way of combining art, drama, and a solid backing in literature to form a unique dance company. This group started about ten years ago in the drama department here at Dartmouth, working hard on intricate and imaginative dance procedures. Supple bodies capable of quick changes of movement and clever balancing poses combined with a deep study of past drama and literature to find sources to try out in dance form. This produced truly intellectual dance. The students started out after college to form their own company as a stopgap while awaiting favorable oppor- tunities to launch other careers. The company, however, was so successful that six or seven of them have continued to give performances everywhere to the delight and benefit of varied audiences. This shows what Dartmouth can do with its attention to the liberal arts as well as to business administration, medicine, and athletics. We need abilities in our graduates in all these fields, and that is what Dartmouth can and does give.
Read also in the March issue of the DARTMOUTH ALUMNI MAGAZINE the article about Michael Moriarty '63, the actor; Thomas Fenton '52, senior European correspondent for CBS News; and the men mentioned in the article by Peter Smith, the director of Hopkins Center. To these should be added a few luminaries of the past such as Walt Wanger '15, who became a movie producer, and his friend Gene Markey '18, who wrote many songs for the musical plays here and wrote, and still writes, books. Add to these many other later students who worked quietly and effectively at teaching, doctoring, and many other professions to enhance the quality of life. Last of all, recall the time when Dartmouth could put a reputable football team on the field a team made up of mostly candidates for Phi Beta Kappa keys. (And speaking of sports, just as this was being written, this year's hockey team came in third in the nation in the NCAA playoffs.) What more could you ask of your college?
A point missed in the last "Sentry": If you plan to go to Williamsburg on October 10-12 and need accommodations, call the Conference Center at 804/229-1600 for reservations. Give your name and mention Dartmouth class of 1917 to get best results. The Dartmouth band will be there, and chartered flights from Hanover and Amtrak specials are in the making. It will be a great time.
Moving days were scheduled during the month of April for all the alumni offices going back to the new Crosby Hall headquarters. What a relief for them and for all of us involved in dealing with these organizations.
And sadly, word was just received of the death of our stalwart class agent, Harold A. Bean, on April 5. His passing is a great loss to the class and the College. His obituary will be in this or next month'S MAGAZINE.
