News reached New England during the winter season from seasoned 1926 travelers in far-off Bali, Indonesia, and peaceful Grenada, namely, Charlie and Adelyn Bishop and Perk and Arlene St. Clair. The Bishops were on a 75-day day cruise around the world on the Rotterdam, on a westward circuit as opposed to their eastward circuit last year. The St. Clairs have been visiting Grenada since 1971, we believe, whether or not U.S. Marines were coming or going.
Bob and Dorothy Stopford spent the Christmas season on a sailboat, cruising the Virgin Islands. Together with Dorothy's older son, Wally, they chartered a 50-footer for two weeks of just loafing around, anchoring at night in some beautiful cove, snorkeling in the morning, then up sail to the next cove. It was a bit of a letdown for Bob in January to have a minor operation prior to his acceptance into the '26 octogenarian club, but by now he has forgotten both events.
George Scott reminds us all of the ongoing Alumni Fund annual campaign seeking 12 million dollars and 70 percent participation. Head agent Scotty points out that last year 1926 had 91 percent alumni participation fifth highest among all classes. Is 1926 UP to 100 percent this year?
Tubba and Barbara Weymouth set forth in early March to visit Mai and Ann Merrill in Tucson, Ariz. They expected to see EllenLouer and other Dartmouth folks of other vintages who winter there.
A local Newton newspaper recently pictured our retired 50th-reunion chair RussClark, who for the past 14 years has documented the doings of the Retired Men's Club of Newton and who has been re-elected secretary for perhaps the next 15 years. He and Betty enjoy retirement at their longtime home in the Waban section of Newton.
For 25 years Bill Blanchard's sister, Grace Mitchell, has published the Paul Revere Courier from her and Bill's Somerville, Mass., home of more than 50 years. The latest annual publication had a story by Grace about Bob May's creation of "Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer" as well as a letter to the editor by Grace's nephew, praising his aunt's longtime excellence in journalism.
Art Smith advised that his Milwaukee octogenarian landmark passed pleasantly, without any unusual fanfare. He and Katherine do a fair bit of skiing or hiking depending on the season both in the surrounding country and in the northern reaches.
George Champion appreciated the opportunity to reread Prexy Hopkins's welcome to the class that appeared in the 1922 Freshman Handbook birthday card. George recalled that when we graduated, Hoppy said that they had failed in the administration and faculty if we didn't go out as better men in our homes, business professions, and communities.
Class secretaries are entrusted to record the comings and goings of classmates; therefore, it behooves your scribe to note that AbbieLouise Jones (Lou) and Don Norstrand were wed on Groundhog Day, February 2, at Union Church, Waban, Mass., and after a brief sojourn in Eleuthera, the Bahamas, took
up residence on Valentine's Day in North Hill retirement community in Needham, Mass. Lou had been introduced to 1926 and Dartmouth at last fall's Harvard game, and while her previous connections were chiefly with Williams College, her father-in-law was Matt B. Jones '94. Don and Marjorie Hopkins, already residents at North Hill, greeted the newlyweds at their first appearance in the dining room, and Hank Whitmore will soon be a resident. More on the Dartmouth presence at North Hill at a later date.
In October 1984 the administrators of Dick Hall's House held a reception for members of the classes of1927 and 1977, who serve as cosponsors or patrons of the student infirmary. The class of '27 took onthe role when Mr. and Mrs. E. K. Hall built the House in memory of their son, Dick Hall '27, whodied in 1923 during his freshman year at Dartmouth. At 1927's 50th reunion the class of 1977 willinglyjoined them in their efforts to contribute to the operation of the House. Standing in front of a portraitof Dick Hall at the reception are, left to right, Tammy Bane; 1977's class president, Richard Bane;1927's class president, Paul Hannah; chairman of the Dick Hall's House committee, Betsey Cox Stebbins'77; and Philip Stebbins.
