One of the noblest members of the class is Noble MacFarlane, who was a Sigma Chi during college years. Noble went on to medical school and then to Lexington, Ky., where for 28 years he practiced medicine as a specialist in pediatrics with a medical group known as the Lexington Clinic. Noble retired in the summer of 1984 because of recurring heart problems which had originated in 1978. Although he's had a couple of bypass procedures, Noble remains active as a part-time professor of pediatrics at the University of Kentucky Medical School, and when I spoke to him in April, he had just returned with his wife, Claire, from a trip to New Zealand and Australia. Noble and Claire have four children. The eldest, Charles, graduated from Brown and Boston College Law School. He marrried a graduate of Boston University School of Law, and they both practice law in Boston. Daughter Lindsay, a Tufts graduate, operates a print shop in Boston, and son W. Duncan works for Host Communications in Lexington, Ky. He is married and about to make Noble and Claire grandparents this summer. Duncan graduated from DePauw College in Greencastle, Ind. The youngest, Mary Stuart (and how's that for Scottish vibrancy!), graduates from Wittenberg College in Ohio in June and has been accepted at graduate school at Tufts. Noble sounds vibrant and energetic. We hope to persuade him to return to the College for our 40th reunion.
Standing tall in upstate New York, SidJohnston welcomes visiting classmates, one and all. Large-hearted Sid makes that statement, realizing that only the initiated know where Lockport, N.Y. is located. He's come a long way (about 20 miles!) from Medina, N.Y., his hometown, and presides with efficiency and elegance over Johnston's Linens, Inc. Get the picture? Barbara and he have two sons: Jeffery is 34, a Dartmouth graduate, and lives in Attleboro, Mass., with his wife and three children. He is an editor with Allen Bacon Company, a publisher of college textbooks, which, in turn, is a division of Simon and Schuster. Scott, a Gettysburg College graduate, is a social worker with the Williamsburg Workshop near Norfolk, Va., his residence, and is marrying in May. Sid was scheduled to pass through Hanover en route to Mexico, Maine, a wild place for a wedding. Sid's only contact with classmates lately has been some years ago with Brayton Meyer, who lives and operates an investment business in East Aurora, N.Y., and Don Scully, who is retired and residing in Orchard Park, N.Y., home of the Buffalo Bills' Rich Stadium.
The Wichita Flash, my new monicker for Dick Leslie, is still in his hometown, Wichita, Kans. Dick and wife Jennae, a Wichita girl, were married prior to Dick's junior year at Dartmouth. They have two children, Melinda, who graduated from Kansas State and lives in Wichita, and Richard Jr., who graduated from Wichita State, is married, and works in a family enterprise known as "The Cotillion." That's a multi-purpose building used for civic events of all purposes, built by Dick some years ago. Dick operates singlehandedly various properties, including a Pizza Hut, a Long John Silver, and various shopping centers in Wichita. As yet, he has no grandchildren, but that, too, will pass.
For those in the Washington, D.C., area, be advised that Jordan Kurland holds forth as associate general secretary of the American Association of University Professors. His wife, Anita, and he have four children. Jordan's office is at One DuPont Circle, and he also lives in the "District."
The Alumni Fund drive may be over by the time this issue is disseminated, but it's never too late to comment on our class performance. People like Bob Rooke and Ed Leede have set the pace for many years, and while not all of us subscribe to the same theories about the College, let me tell you that in a very difficult age of changing societal values, the Hanover Plain is still a beacon for an extraordinary kind of education. We have a president who is now making decisions, like the resuscitation of ROTC on campus, and doing it in difficult academic circumstances. My contribution this year is a manifestation of confidence in President Dave McLaughlin and the Trustees. Burt Proom is indefatigable as our head agent, and I enjoy the honor of being associated with Burt in his endeavors.
