Leading American abstract artist Frank Stella will give this year's Convocation address to inaugurate a week of dedication events for the new Hood Museum of Art. Jacquelynn Baas, director of the Hood, describes Stella as "a lively thinker and a provocative speaker."
Stella has been at the forefront of the American art world since the 1950s. Considered the founder of "minimalist" painting, he is also known for his shaped canvases. Stella was in residence at Dartmouth in 1963, when he produced a group of paintings called the Dartmouth series. He has loaned two works for the opening of the College's new museum, including one from the Dartmouth series.
Stella's Convocation address, on September 23 at 11:00 a.m. in Thompson Arena, will be the first in a week-long series of events to celebrate the opening of the Hood. For a complete program, call 603/646-2808.
