Dear Class: Greetings, Greetings, Greetings. I hope you all had pleasant holidays and are now on your way skiing or sunning or sailing, depending on your desires. Let's start off the New Year with notes from all over:

From Bob and Marcia Kelley: "Sorry to have missed out on the Alumni College, but our retirement years seem to be increasingly busy. Will be heading for Australia in January to greet the arrival of our 14th grandchild." From Bob Hartmann: "Had a fine talk with John F. 'Facts'McDonald Jr. (my Crosby Hall roomie) in Boston last week, followed by another trip north to son's wedding in NYC, followed by Hurricane Elena, followed by daughter's wedding in Northampton, Mass. Whew! Don't get around much anymore!"

And, here's ah update from Dr. TedBartelmez in Colma, Calif.: "Was going great guns in army medicine when, in 1952, I was nailed by polio, which knocked me out for a good 10 years. [Afterwards] I was able to pick up teaching and hospital medicine in San Francisco. Retired a couple of years ago. Think the memorial book program is a great idea and the lighting of Baker Tower absolutely outstanding. Warmest personal regards."

From Trenny Trenholm: "Off to Rome for a fortnight at the end of October 'home to Rome.' Great to see everyone in Hanover at the 45th. Everyone holding their years well." Will Pitz echoes that thought: "Enjoyed seeing you and other '4os at the 45th reunion ... we are looking forward to the 50th ... it should be a barn burner! [Hear! hear! D.B.] After reunion we went on to White Mountains, Stowe, Montreal, Quebec. Still working some of us have to keep the Social Security pot solvent."

Dick Hawkes chimes in: "Retired from Pioneer Credit Corporation in '75 after running it for nearly 22 years, then into the real estate business which I still do on a part-time basis. Our son is in the insurance business in Denver; oldest daughter in Toledo area, middle daughter in Port Orford, Ore., and youngest daughter in Aurora, Colo., working for Delta Airlines."

All of the above comes to us courtesy of Stet Whitcher, who often gets bits of news along with the checks for class dues. Oh yes, the dues are overdue. Don't forget send it to Stet.

Sid Phillips is getting restless: "Having put in some 38 years teaching at colleges in the East and Midwest, I am getting ready to hang up my academic jockstrap. Re the 45th: The day before we were to leave, some heavy junk from a truck coming towards us flew through the air and creamed the whole left side of the car. A foot and half higher and it would have creamed me!" Sid has a daughter on the West Coast, a son in Burlington, Vt., and a younger son in Wisconsin. We'll look for you at the 50th, Sid. From Dayton, Ohio, this word from Chuck Haskell: "Ann and I have just returned from a short trip east. Had lunch with Dan andBetty Rectanus a great mini-mini-reunion. Will be in Sarasota this March. Jackand Helen Maynard, who will be docked in Fort Myers, are planning to visit. Dayton Dartmouth Alumni meet once a month for lunch good to chin with the younger grads. Best regards." And then we heard from Harry Hoyt down in Vero Beach (sometimes known as 1940 South): "Spent four months at our place in Martha's Vineyard, saw Fred Eaton once or twice and had Eb and Mevie Cockley for a visit just before they went to the fall mini. I hope to make the mini this fall. Right now I'm too busy with various committees and meetings here, but manage to get in a trip now and then. Australia and New Zealand last year, but nothing planned for this year." Thanks for the news, Harry, and we'll count on you for the fall mini. A very nice note from Frank Agar included a copy of the Minneapolis Sunday Tribune story on Frank and his son, Will, "Photography as Art." I wish we could reproduce from the magazine so you could see a lot of fine, documentary-style photographs. Frank went to Minneapolis in 1951, having been lured into photography from his sketches and cartoons. Frank's show, "Rooms to Let" is in the permanent collection, Minneapolis Institute of Art.

Ben and Gene Bacon telephoned us from Sanibel, just too late to be included in the December column. They are fine and had just completed a tour and visit that began with the 45th reunion. They were checking up on the Bowmans to see how we fared during Hurricane Gloria (we fared well).

I thought it would be appropriate to kick off 1986 by quoting (without permission) from head agent Ted Miller's letter to the class of last October: "Many of you have not been back to Hanover recently, and that is too bad. You should go back and talk with the wonderful youngsters who are studying and learning in that beautiful place. You would be surprised how the 'magic' of Dartmouth returns." As one who had not been back recently until 1985, I can attest to the truth of the statement.

That's a wrap, guys and girls. Get out your Christmas pencils and write a note to the class.
