Dear Class:
Let this midsummer issue put thoughts of our not-so-far-away fabulous fiftieth in your heads. And, let's hear it for Ted Miller and his stalwart crew who whomped up another good year for the Alumni Fund.
Starting back in March, here are the news clips. Bill and Jane Huffman were off to California, visiting their daughter in Irvine. Also took time to see Scotty and LoomieRogers. Lloyd and Peg Blanchard planned a return trip to Scotland this summer (especially fishing). Lloyd has been a longtime worker for the Alumni Fund. Gard Ashley was in France and snowless Switzerland during January. Tried to reach Jim McElroy but they couldn't connect. Gard also happened to see Tom Braden's "Eight is Enough," complete with French sound track! Gard is in Middlebury, Vt., for the summer. Chal Carothers just missed the May issue with news of his new venture-Carothers Management Services, Inc.-a private investment company. He is the chief trader and reports that the company weathered last October in fine shape.
Bob Raclin has been back in Chicago since last year after a stint in D.C. as deputy undersecretary in the Department of Health. He expects to be full time as chair of the National Citizen's Commission on Alcoholism. Johnny Crandell reports that he and Betty expect to be in Vermont for the summer and in Hanover this fall. That's good news.
Joe Bird is busier than ever, having taken on the job of reunion treasurer for our 50th. So, a Wah-Hoo-Wah for Joe, and a reminder to all of us about that advance contribution towards the reunion tax. Pay now and play later! Chuck Haskell tried Sun City West last winter and they must have liked it because that is now their permanent address. James "Rollie" Raymond in touch after a long silence. His wife Vera passed away in January of this year. Our sympathies go to Rollie. Chet and Ruthe Berry's postcard came in from Nanking, China—an exciting an enlightening trip. They'll be back on Cape Cod by the time you read this.
It's always nice to hear from our beloved widows—in this case, Marie Swenson (Kneeland "Bud" Swenson). Their oldest grandson, Todd, has been accepted for early admission, giving the Swensons memberships in '09, '40, '71, and now '92. And that's not counting cousins! Bud Hewitt send on a nice news item, featuring a photo of Bud Schlivek at the Regional Plan Association dinner in NYC. The item included many photos from Bud's book "Man in Metropolis" (no connection with that guy in the blue union suit). The Hewitts are in good shape and Bud is enjoying being an activist in their town.
Each spring the dedicated Canoe Clubbers come down to the mouth of the river at Old Saybrook, where the Dartmouth Club of Southeastern Connecticut hosts a party. Who was in the first canoe? IkeWeed, outpaddling the undergraduates. Also on hand were Lee and I, Gordie Wentworth, and Bob and Didi Gensel. A great group of students!
See you in September. Keep writing!
