Alumni Council report
OCTOBER • 1986 MARK P. HARTY '73

Greetings from the Alumni Council. As this is the Dartmouth Alumni Magazine, it seems only appropriate to have a regular column reporting on Council activities. I want to thank the editors for making space available for this introductory column and the ones which will follow.

What is the Alumni Council and what is it doing? While many of you are familiar with the work of the Council, this is a common inquiry. The Council's Constitution states that it is "to act as a clearinghouse for alumni and the interchange of alumni ideas . . . and that it is to act as the official spokesman of alumni sentiment to the administration and as the avenue of approach by which the administration should have access to the alumni collectively."

One of the main reasons for this column is to better fulfill that constitutional charge. While many Councilors have been diligent in reporting to their various constituencies, better communication and the active "interchange of ideas" is essential for the Dartmouth alumni community. The Alumni Council is the forum for all alumni, either directly or through their representatives. We are interested in your thoughts about the College and its future. We seek your ideas for programs and policies which you believe the Alumni Council should initiate and promulgate. Please do not hesitate to contact either your representative or me. My address is listed with the 1973 class column.

The Alumni Council has a number of interesting items on its agenda this year including Trustee nominations and input into the College's Planning and Priorities Study. I will report in more detail on those issues and others in my next report. In the meantime, I look forward to hearing from you.
