In April President McLaughlin accepted a recommendation from former New Hampshire Governor Walter Peterson '47 that 10 students who had attempted to demolish the shanties on the Green have the terms of their sanctions reduced. Each of the 10 will be required to complete substantial public service projects "based upon the concepts set forth in the Principles of Community and/or Freedom of Expression or Dissent" in the student handbook.
One student opted to avoid the public service project and to take the initial penalty of a two-term suspension instead. Projects assigned to the other nine will include working for the Big Brother program, working in hospitals, and tutoring disadvantaged children.
