Stephen Crystal '87 is one of five candidates seeking one of the four House seats allotted to Hanover in the state legislature. Crystal, a former New Yorker who became a New Hampshire resident, is running as a Democrat because "the youth of this nation have become too accustomed to taking. I want to give something back." Crystal, if elected, faces the difficult task of balancing his class load with his legislative duties. Because he believes that state aid to education is a high priority, he will ask for an assignment on the education committee.
The lone Republican opposition facing the slate of four Democrats is Mark Hansen '84. Hansen, like Crystal, is a New York native and a political novice. Hansen declared his candidacy at the eleventh hour because there were no Republican candidates in the race. If elected, Hansen also will seek an assignment on the education committee. He leans towards the position that the individual and the family, not the government, should determine curriculum.
