On Jack and Jerry Gunther's move to Duncaster, a retirement community in Bloomfield, Conn., the New Canaan Advertiser headed a story, "Longtime residents depart, but leave lasting beauty behind." It spoke of Jack's founding and heading the New Canaan Land Conservation Trust and chairing committees and writing guides for such work nationwide. It praised Jerry's contributions to hospital and other community work and her prowess as a nature photographer.

After Harvard Law Jack was an executive for Air Reduction, Inc. He helped his father write The Identification of Firearms, a book that was instrumental in the admission of ballistics tests as legal evidence. If you think he's wholly retired, ask him if your will or a trust might help both you and Dartmouth.

The North Hill retirement spot in Needham, Mass., now has its own Dartmouth Club. After lunch there recently with Pete Wheatley '24 and Ken Sampson '31, I ran into our radiant Virginia and Tibby Thibodeau on their way out to shop.

Charlie Goldsmith and his son were invited guests for the opening of Loew's Theater in the Hood Museum. The program listed biographies of Dartmouth alumni active in the film industry but left out Charlie. Ort Hicks '21 gave me the lost biography.

Charlie was a star sprinter and one of the nicest guys I remember. He joined MGM in 1931 and worked in Brazil, Trinidad, and New York until 1942 when he left for service with the U.S. Office of War Information as chief of distribution overseas. In 1947 he returned to MGM International as coordinator of affairs for the British Empire countries. In 1952 he went to England and became managing director and chairman of MGM Pictures, Ltd. He held two British government appointments, one as member of the Cinematographic Films Council and one as a governor of the British Film Institute. He retired in 1962 and lives in West Palm Beach, Fla.

How good it is to have stories like Jack s and Charlie s without waiting for an obituary notice when it's often too late to get them. We've recently written obits for John Bliss, Phil Dinsmore, Bill Griscom, Bill Ivey, Don Jeffrey, and TomWhite. Do give us your story while we can still enjoy it.

It would be a shame if the media furor about Dartmouth doings dimmed any of our pride in and love of the College. Dartmouth is great and more alive than most colleges. The more I know of the inside stories, the more I love and appreciate her.

When Paul Paganucci left to take an irresistible job with W. R. Grace, he wrote me of his "esteem for Dave McLaughlin and his admiration for his leadership." He said, "I feel he has accomplished more at Dartmouth since January 1981 than has been accomplished by the president of any other college or university in America, and it has been a special privilege for me to work with him."

As to the rest of our world: The Soviets for Ho Chi Min Did all they could to help him win, And now they grab Afghanistan And watch our Congress put a ban On sending more than token aid. With help like that they've got it made.
