'29s oldest classmate, Dmitry Shiraeff, repaid Dartmouth for his three years on full scholarship with a bequest of $850,000 for scholarships for undergraduate chemistry students. He fled the Russian Revolution and lived in Turkey until he found his way to Dartmouth at age 23. How we wish we had more of his story. Do we have any more such sleepers?
Art Nighswander won't put it in '29 Up that the Boston Globe gave half a page to his good works in Laconia, N.H., on his retirement as a director of Lakes Region Hospital. The board set up a fund in his name to help pay costs for needy citizens.
Laconia people early recognized Art's character and put up jobs and scholarship to send him to Dartmouth and Columbia Law. He returned to Laconia and has devoted himself to its welfare ever since. To quote: "Nighswander just might head the list for the number of state and local organizations he has helped."
His wife, Esther, has served eight years in the state legislature and rivaled Art in civic works. They plan to retire to Kendal in Hanover soon, but they'll probably be too busy to move.
Bill Magenau and Dud Orr are still working to make taxes more fair for older folks. Jack Gunther was a national force for preservation of open spaces. Ed Abbott and StanPiatt are still fighting and writing for the welfare of man. Dan Luten still teaches and writes for our intelligent use of our world. Who else in '29 has done or is doing such good works? Families, don't be bashful. Let's make a list.
For heroes I'll take Mary and Dick Burke. Dick's paralysis is unchanged. He's brought into their apartment every day and probably could hear your kind words.
21 '29ers and wives attended John Dickey's memorable memorial service on April 13. Charlie Dudley arranged for us to sit next to the Dickey family and set up a lunch before the service where we were joined by BillMorgan's son Spence. John Dickey Jr. joined us, and he spoke a few gracious words.
And now: Oh, Lord and guiding spirit of us all Whose will we seek to know as best we can, Show us the way, whatever may befall, To understand and love our fellow man.
