Man, sometimes this job is so easy. Like when a huge piece of news drops on your desk, something so spicy, so scintillating, so compelling you can't wait to convey it. Well, have I got just the golden nugget for you. Did you hear—oops wait, news flash from the class of'85 about a mini-reunion during Homecoming Weekend. Join the classes of 1976 to 1991 on Saturday, October 14, at the Top of the Hop from 2 to 4:30 p.m. for a music fest featuring plenty of entertainment, food, beverages and old friends.
Back to this mega-news. I can't wait...what, another e-mail from the College, this one about Kevin Ash. It seems Kevin, founder and creative di- rector of Connecticut-based ad agency Kevin J. Ash Creative Design (okay, I'll ask—what's so cre- ative about that name?), was selected as a win- ner in this year's 23rd annual Healthcare Marketing Advertising Awards sponsored by the Heal thcare Marketing Report. The award recognized Kevin's agency for its national branding effort for one of the nations largest healthcare providers. Attaboy, Kevin!
All right, back to the major scoop. It seems our classmate...hold on, I can't believe it, another communication, this time from a Peter Lubin '80. (Things must be rolling when other classes send me notes.) Peter sent news of his brother and our classmate Tom Lubin, who has been quite busy in a variety of ventures, including the creation of two successful Internet companies. Tom started Fastweb.com, a college scholarship research engine that he subsequently sold to Monster. After leaving Monster Tom started Next Wave, an Internet advertising agency, a portion of which was just sold to Shamrock Holdings. In the press release Tom was noted as a "leader and innovator in Internet lead generation." Prior to this Tom was a Luce scholar and Stanford Law School graduate. He spent time traveling all over Asia and had some of his photos published in Time and Fortune. He also wrote copy for the Seoul Olympics. Summarize it to say, Tom has a lot of interesting stories and would be a welcome addition at any cocktail party. Thanks to Peter for the update. Now Tom can add "Mentioned in Class of 1985 Column" to his resume!
Okay, now I'm back to relay this huge news. But first, I should tell you that I heard Glenn Eberie is flying planes for a regional airline in Boise. This would lead me to encourage everyone to eat a lot of potatoes. Where's the segue, you ask? Not sure, I answer.
Sadly, I must inform you of the recent death in April of our classmate Mariken Straub-Kessler. Mariken died April 1 in Baltimore, Maryland, after a long and courageous battle with cancer. She is survived by her husband of 15 years, George Kessler, and their two children, Sam (13) and Sophie (11), and many other family members and friends. At Dartmouth Mariken spent time abroad in Toulouse, France, and was a member of the crew team. An accomplished pianist and cellist, Mariken was also an avid cyclist. She previously taught at Baltimore Polytechnic Institute and later was a licensed acupuncturist. Those who knew her will remember her engaging manner and endearing smile.
All right, you've waited long enough for this. In fact, we've all waited many years for this. I can't wait any longer. What, I'm at the word limit—I can't share this blockbuster in all its glory! Doesn't everyone want to know that Lawrence James Newman III finally got married?
