Always on call to offer short term aid to our leader, Jim Gregg, I submit the following "guest" update on the class of 1983:
After nine months, we've finally begun to adjust to the world beyond. Perhaps the most appropriate response comes from Bruce Bassett and AL Eagle, who have independently decided that Sun Valley, Idaho, will have the warmest hearths this winter. Intel's lagging profits didn't mean Bruce's lagging luck as he tells of a housesitting arrangement carrying two demands: shoveling when it snows and "making sure the maid does a good job." Andy Davilman is already scheming a February leave of absence from the Brooklyn company he now heads and his newly-acquired New York apartment to meet Bruce on Limelight. An invitation to Bruce Montgomery also stands, should he happen to resurface in Boise before summer.
An update on the state of Dartmouth rowing, circa 1983, finds most oarsmen and women still within a paddle of Hanover. Bill Middlesworth and John Aney are diagnosing diseases at their respective med schools in Massachusetts and New Jersey, while Annie Dupre is still managing her Quincy Market clothing business. Mike Hjerpe has finally sacrificed his social agenda of Bath, Maine, and Arthur Andersen to join Winthrop Securities in Boston. In New York, Andre Hunter continues at Bankers Trust where he trades company secrets with Chicago lenders. The lone pioneers seem to be Jeff Gardner, recently relocated from Atlanta to Denver with Balcour American Express, and Will Hastings, who went from Hanover to the other place with hot tubs, Silicon Valley (he is at Hewlett Packard).
In Chicago, news of several alumni: After months of humming "New York, New York," Jim Gregg has decided that "Chicago, Chicago" has an attractive and constant ring. Cathy Barr's name recently turned up on a list of new Kellogg School students. Bill Scoville is looking for engineering work in the city, while John Birkenmeir has signed on with Procter and Gamble in central Illinois.
Our best hopes for protection if Summits Two and Three prove hopeless will be John David, Jim Allen, and Joe Kirby. John is training to fly navy strike jets in Meridian, Miss., while Jim is based on a navy frigate in San Diego which sails for the Far East later this year. Joe is reportedly stationed with the army in Germany. In Texas, Mac Gardner is working with a real estate syndicate in Dallas while JohnLeonard is selling investment strategies to those most profitable of customers, the "high net worth individual." Both are contemplating moves back east. Also in Dallas is Lisa Tromovitch, who serves as one of two graduate theater directors at SMU.
Farther out west, Elaine Anderson has traded in the ax for the guitar as she's left the DOC to pursue music studies in Los Angeles. Alan Bradford is working towards his master's in hydrology at the University of Arizona. Farthest away of all, Justin Rudelson has finally returned from travels in China. He reports that his great spirits were tempered by hepatitis, which he promptly yet unwittingly passed on to his family.
In New York, Mayor Koch continues to pander to the '83 vote. Reed Webster eased out of academics at Germantown Academy and into the commercial lending training program at U.S. Trust. Lest we be too concerned, however, some things never change: poems from former female pupils reportedly adorn his Wall Street cubicle. Peter Ham and Rob Rohn, both still with Morgan Guaranty, recently joined Reed and Lisa Cholnoky for a Yale weekend climb of Mount Adams.
As the entries in the "after all, we're all over 21" category, here is a rundown of those of us who have been or will soon be married: Melanie Law and Rob Stein,Beth Ruckle and Ben Mackey, Sam Reckford and Sue Spencer '84, Mark Hauseman, Laura Stephens, Suzanne Brubaker,Kate Drislane, Julie Cochran, Liz Cahill and Marty Lempres '84, Betsy Evans and Randy Bodner '81, Jim Dompkowski, JimBloomer and Mindy Marsh '84, and AndyCharon. At least two late fall weddings attracted large crowds of Dartmouth support. Lisa Kistner and Alan Farney (Haverford '83) welcomed Loredana Serra,Mary Beth Shimkus, Jeanne Balcomb,Becky Rossner, Bruce and Brian Yirinec,Lisa Ottaviano, and Mark Wallace. And finally Kathy Batchelder and Mike Coster invited A number of guests to an early Hurricane Honeymoon (i.e. Gloria) including best man Wade Welch, maid of honor Lolly Jewett, Mark Flessel, PeterBarry, Mark Weiss, Mark Howard-Johnson, Dave Crane, Denny LeClair, PeggyGilges, Lauren and Jim Mitchell, BethWinnick, Deb Ellsworth, Sally Kahler,Deb Robbins, Kelly Fowler, and AndreHunter.
Best wishes in the spring ahead.
