Blossoms in winter
APRIL 1986

The freshman crop of Dartmouth winter athletes has blossomed, auguring well for the future of the College's winter sports teams. Through victories haven't come as often or as easily as coaches, athletes, and Big Green faithful would like, the freshman members of the winter squads are showing solid promise for the years ahead.

The men's basketball team has eight freshmen on the roster. Jim Barton (Memphis, Tenn.) is near the top of coach Paul Cormier's squad in scoring, while John Bean (Dorchester, Mass.) leads the team in rebounding. Jason Lobo (Southwick, Mass.), a 6'11" center, is number one in blocked shots. And still another freshman, Eugene Sims (Amarillo, Tex.) leads the Green in field goal accuracy, making 71.4 percent of his shots. As many as three freshmen have started in one game this season, and five different rookies have started at least one game this year.

In women's basketball, there are six freshmen and a strong candidate for Ivy League Rookie of the Year for the second season in a row. Liz Walter (Sheridan, Wyo.) is Dartmouth's leading rebounder and second-leading scorer, behind threetime all-Ivy center Jayne Daigle (Lebanon, N.H.). A 6'0" forward, Walter is among the Ivy leaders in both scoring and rebounding. Women's hoop coach Jacqueline Hullah has started three freshmen at different times this season. Forward Nancy Fitz (Chagrin Falls, Ohio) is third on the team in rebounding, while guard Marie Polakowski (Maple City, Mich.) has shown considerable talent after a slow start due to injury.

On the ice, men's coach Brian Mason has a whopping total of 12 first-year players on his roster. Frosh centers Andy Donahue (Reading, Mass.) and Mark Glover (Hyannis, Mass.) have been the Big Green's leading scorers for much of the season, with classmate Tom Finks (Winnetka, Ill.) just behind. Ned Desmond (Princeton, N.J.), Butch Coughlin (Arlington, Mass.), and Rob Goulet (Belmont, Mass.) are among the first-year defensemen who have performed well for the Green. And in the goal, Tim Osby (Ottawa, Ont.) has played the most minutes, has turned away the most shots, and has the lowest goals-against average of the three varsity goalies.

Women hockey coach Amy Crafts has five freshmen on her squad, with Gina Gualtieri (Billerica, Mass.) among the leading scorers.

Men's squash coach Chuck Kinyon is looking to freshman Jeff Critchley (Plain'e while women's squash coach Aggie Kurtz has a promising freshman in Allison Moir (Hanover,N.H.).

Ron Keenhold, coach of the men's swim team, has gotten good performances from two first-year members Rob Shapiro (Sudbury, Mass.) and Harry Bruni (La Jolla, Calif.)-and the women's swim team also has several standout freshmen, including Jeannine Laz (Naples, Fla.) and Dina Hulsizer (East Windsor, N.J.).

Both the men's and women's track teams also had good recruiting seasons, with high jumper Robin Mac Donald (Weston, Mass.) and middle distance runner Audrienne Walters (Bronx, N.Y.) at the head of the women's class, and distance runners David Aman (Liverpool, N.Y.) and Tom Paskus (Terryville, Conn.) among the top first-year men.
