The June Alumni Council meeting is still much in mind. Outstanding was a presentation by a group of new 'B6 alums who spoke clearly, grammatically, and with solid sense. Something's going great at Dartmouth.
A faculty-student group put out a 24 page recommendation to fulfill all the wishes of our oppressed-feeling minorities. I wondered if they'd want to drop the name Dartmouth as smacking too much of English nobility. It urged that "Men of Dartmouth" be sung only at gatherings of older alumni. The Council, women and men, voted unanimously to sing our alma mater on all important occasions until the orderly progress of our College may improve it by common consent.
You'd have enjoyed John Laffey at Cape Cod's annual dinner asking a lovely new alumna the name of that tower near the Bema. When she said "Bartlett," he carefully explained that the traditional name was the "Smith Gymnasium."
The Tuck magazine twice pictured BenStacey at their annual giving session. His results for Tuck's class of 1930 made a longer list than nearby classes. The Big Bear, Calif., "Grizzly" again hailed Edand Bev Abbott for completing a 20-mile walk for the March of Dimes. That's at 6,800 feet altitude! He has full faith in President McLaughlin.
A great talk with Hal Hirsch found him full of life after a successful cancer operation like Reagan's. His Dartmouth feelings take the positive form of his running the Oregon-Washington Alumni College this year. He's still active at Reed College and the Oregon Medical School.
Hal's old roommate Gene Davis and Mimi sent us a November 1925 copy of the Dartmouth listing '29ers at ski trials, including Abbott, Barney, Bates, Berger,Brittan, Cate, Clifford, Hartstone, Jewell,Jones, Kemble, Losey, Montamat, Mc-Knight, Owsley, Vincent, and Walker. Skaters were: Davis, Diack, Harris, and Quebman. Ski jumpers were: Bell, Collins,Lehman, Maxham, Waterman, and White.
We most sadly have to report that young, smiling, warm Dick Brown died in May after a stroke. Our Archie Crowley took part in the memorial service and wrote his obituary. Florence Brown wrote us of Dick's love for Dartmouth and for all of us. She also reported that DickEberline has come through heart surgery with flying colors.
Charlie Goldsmith wrote a beautiful note about the new Eleazar Wheelock Award given to his old friend and associate Ort Hicks '21. Charlie has been visiting his son Henry '62 and was back in his West Palm Beach air-conditioned home. He says playing golf from a cart isn't too much of a hardship. Do you get off to shoot, Charlie?
Dick Burke and I exchange letters with many people about reports from Dartmouth. Many of us have stopped helping the Revieiv since its recent mean articles and brash actions. Here's one for the Review:
We know you're proud of talking tough And in no way obeisant, But being right is not enough. Be also decent!
