The "Fabulous Fortieth" is now history, but the glowing memory of yet another truly enjoyable Dartmouth experience will be with all of the 243 attendees for many months to come! Once again, we all owe a large expression of gratitude to JackWhitman, our reunion chairman, and to his committee!

Assisting Jack with registration and the many on-site details were local stalwarts Bob and Jackie Kimball, Dune and RuthFitchet, Whitey and Joanne Burnham,Reg and Nancy Pierce, and Ed and MollyScheu. Special kudos to Ray, Susie, andChris DeWees coming from Glenbrook, Ireland, and to the California contingent, some 17 strong!

Following golf, tennis, assorted luncheons, campus tour, and panel discussion (in truly fabulous weather), a most enjoyable class reception at the Fayer weather cluster tent preceded the traditional alumni reunion dinner in Thompson Arena. The dinner highlight clearly was the performance of the combined '46, '50, '51, and '52 glee clubs. The renditions of "Dartmouth Undying" and "The Evening Song" by our contemporaries particularly expressed the true meaning of why we'd gathered once more as a class in the Dartmouth spirit!

After dinner, the informal visit at the home of President and Mrs. McLaughlin and the traditional Glee Club concert preceded action at the tent, with dancing to the music of "Bill Payne's Boston Swing and Jazz Band." Strong rumor has it that the tent was closed in the wee hours by John (Tiger) Vallely, Don Furber, BobPoet, and the current Dartmouth Glee Club!

The outing, brunch, and class meeting at Lake Morey were most successful due once again to excellent weather and to the effective leadership of President JimLynch. The following new class officers were elected: president, Gus Gillaugh; vice president, Dune Fitchet, treasurer, Ham Bailey; and secretary, Walt Snickenberger. The new executive committee will include Jim Lynch, Jack Whitman, DaveWeld, Bob Kimball, Reg Pierce, BuolHinman, Harvey White, Jim Coleman, EdScheu, Don Furber, Bill White, DickScharrer, Andy Grunninger, Bob Poet,Art Young, Monk Martin, Bob Hunt, and Paul Engelhart. In addition, HarlanBrumsted was named newsletter editor; Jack Sayers and Whitey Burnham will be mini-reunion co-chairmen; and FrankEttari will continue as bequest chairman. The class meeting concluded with an excellent panel discussion, "The Class of 1946 and The College Today,"presided over by Jim Lynch and including Ed Scheu, Dune Fitchet, and Jim Shute. The pluses and minuses of the current administration of the College were aired, with varying points of view expressed by the panel and the audience. Accompanying a general feeling of frustration with the inability of the College to deal promptly and equitably in matters of student conduct and discipline, was the recognition that the management of any college of high quality in these times is a most complicated process and one difficult to relate to life in non-academic circles.

On return from Lake Morey, the class reception was held in the south courtyard of the Hood Museum, and our reunion banquet took place in the adjacent Hopkins Center Alumni Hall. Reg Pierce ably toastmastered the banquet, recalling to many former V-12'ers Marine Sergeant "Black Jack" Gant, Navy Commander Bullis, Marine Major Howland, and others in that unique period in their Dartmouth experience. President McLaughlin appeared for a brief word of welcome, followed by a report from Dave Weld on the status of reunion giving and the general state of our fund efforts. Jack Whitman was honored for his splendid work over the years for class and College, highlighted by his nomination for membership on the Alumni Council. Retiring president Jim Lynch was extremely gracious in his final remarks, and the Dartmouth Aires singing group performed an excellent selection of Dartmouth melodies and nostalgic tunes of the '40s and '50s. The '46 dance at the Top of the Hop and further tent activities closed a most enjoyable and productive reunion day!

Despite heavy rain, the final morning of reunion included a well-attended class memorial service in Rollins Chapel, presided over by ministerial classmates DonFitzsimmons, George Magoon, Jon O'-Brien, and George Razee. Rob Smith contributed his excellent voice to a touching tribute to our departed friends. Don delivered the memorial address, a challenging and provocative message to us who carry on. It will appear in the class newsletter.

A late morning farewell brunch at Reg and Nancy Pierce's Inn in Etna was well attended, with golf and tennis awards presented. Perhaps the most distinctive prize was given to Art Young for the best looking legs on the tennis court!

Prior to the brunch, Gus Gillough presided at our first executive committee meeting. We are in good hands.

Our next mini-reunion will be in Hanover October 17-19, Dartmouth Night Weekend. Call Whitey Burnham for details at 603/646-2463.
