By the time this is in print, your secretary will be making final preparations for retirement after 35 years in higher education administration. Mary and I plan to return permanently to the Dartmouth area and are eagerly awaiting the opportunity to be physically much closer to the College, as well as to our family, many classmates, and other friends in the Northeast.
Recent months have not been pleasant for us who work at Southern Methodist University as anyone following intercollegiate athletics at all closely can appreciate. Especially frustrating has been the intense and very negative publicity directed at an otherwise fine private university that has been making real advances in faculty and student quality in recent years. As my annual, but all-too-modest contribution to the Alumni Fund was mailed in mid-March, I could not help but reflect on the basic soundness of Ivy League athletic policy, as compared with the "big time," especially in the Southwest Conference. How thankful I am that my family personally has been a part of a system whose basic principles ensure the highest possible degree of integrity in this important extracurricular segment of student life!
On a much less philosophical note, ColinGunn recently has completed three years as chairman of the board of trustees of the Norwalk (Conn.) Hospital. He is remaining on the board as chairman of the legal affairs committee.
Again, it is my unhappy duty to report the death of a classmate, Frank Brady, Ph.D., who passed away on September 2, 1986. Frank received his advanced degrees at Yale and taught English at Yale, Dartmouth, Penn State, and the City University of New York. He was unmarried and is survived by a sister, Mrs. John Mersch of Los Angeles, Calif.
Pardon the brevity of this column, but it simply reveals the need for much more news from all of you guys. Please let me hear from you!
