This has been a great year for the class of '54. -The College has seen fit to recognize the dynamic leadership of the class by presenting Charlie Morrison and JohnGillespie with Alumni Awards. Charlie's award was presented at the annual dinner of the Dartmouth Alumni Association of Eastern Massachusetts. The theme of the dinner was "Reaching for Excellence," so Charlie's award was particularly fitting since that certainly summarizes Charlie's professional life as well as his efforts on behalf of the College. At that same dinner, faculty members who had been recipients of Dartmouth's Distinguished Teaching Award were recognized. These awards have been given under a program established by Jerry Goldstein, who attended the dinner.

John Gillespie's award was presented at the Class Officers Weekend in May. John was recognized for his outstanding performance in so many class officer positions. John has been our class secretary, class newsletter editor, and class minireunion chairman. If my memory serves me right, John's performance in each one of these positions has earned him recognition as the outstanding officer of the year. John was joined at the podium for the presentation by that most green of all Big Green wives, Sandy, to whom John paid tribute for her work on behalf of the College and the class.

The Boston dinner was attended by a large contingent from '54 including Dickand Nicole Danforth, Jerry and Dorothy Goldstein, George McLaughlin, Charlie and Frannie Morrison, Pete Roos, Garyand Ann Zwart, Pete and Tricia Bullis,Phil and Sally Cooke, Bill Grover, Dickand Lindy Leary, Chuck Myserian, Bruceand Patty Maclvor, Shelly and ElisabethWoolf, John and Betty Heston, Dave andJudy McLaughlin, and Dick and BarbaraBarker. The Class Officers Weekend was attended by Rick and Anne Hartman,Don and Barbara Berlin, Herb and AnnHillman, John and Sandy Gillespie, Dickand Barbara Barker, Dick Pearl, and myself.

Adding to the honors accrued by the members of the class of 1954 is the selection of Steve Mullins as president-elect of the Alumni Council. Steve will serve as president for the year 1987-88. His election is further evidence of Steve's dedication to the class and the College.

Dick Barker, behind the scenes, and Steve Mullins, in the forefront, contributed to the successful effort within the Alumni Council to maintain a broader representation of class interests within the council, by heading off an attempt to decrease the representation of the class officers groups.

I know the class joins me in extending our congratulations to Charlie Morrison, John Gillespie, and Steve Mullins both for their recognition by the College and for the years of work that have preceded this recognition.

Joe Mesics, our diligent West Coast correspondent, sent me an article from the San Francisco Chronicle, including a picture of that giant among men, BobWoodberry, chairman of Sutro and Company, a West Coast retail-oriented brokerage firm. The article detailed the recent sale of Sutro to Boston-based John Hancock Mutual Life Insurance Company. In its new relationship with Hancock, Bob expects Sutro to have the capital necessary to compete in today's world of larger firms.

Tom Kelsey has been named executive vice president of Chubb Corporation, an insurance holding company based in Warren, N.J. Tom was formerly a vice president of Chubb, where he has been an executive for a major part of his career.

Bob Kenney has been elected to a two- year term as president of the Association of State Supervisors of Mathematics. Bob is still working with the Vermont Department of Education plus teaching evening division math courses at the University of Vermont.

Jonathan Moore has been nominated by President Reagan to serve as ambassador at large, with primary responsibilities as coordinator for refugee affairs. John, who is currently director of the Institute of Politics at Harvard's Kennedy School and was formerly a senior aide at the State, Defense and Justice Departments, will have the responsibility to bolster the government's attention to refugee matters. Congratulations, John, on your selection to this most important post.

Deke DesCombs has been elected to the Board of Fellows of Claremont University Center. Deke is president of the Averbeck Company Insurance Brokers in Pomona, Calif., and has long been active in business and community affairs in the area. Deke is also the past president of the National Association of Insurance Brokers, as well as past president of numerous community organizations.

At the first-ever meeting of the Dartmouth Club of Eleuthera, held last February, three alumni metfor a of strenuous tennis, story-swapping, and an update on the College. The host was BurtCrandell '3O, left. In attendance were John Heston '54, center, and David Salter '53, right.
