Late summer visitors to Hanover, Mort andNancy Thalhimer, were gracious dinner hosts to Bob and Jackie Kimball and Mary and your loyal scribe at the Hanover Inn. If there is an award for the classmate who most closely resembles his college-aged self in appearance and condition, Mort would surely win hands down! In his always courtly southern manner, he attributes this to daily swimming (what else for the star swimmer of our class), plus tennis and newly adopted golf. In a separate visit with Reg Pierce, Mort mentioned that fellow Richmondite, HankStern, is building a new house in the Florida Keys.
Dune and Ruth Fitchet enjoyed a visit to Alaska in August, including several national parks Dune had mapped for the National Park Service. Included on their itinerary were visits to Juneau, Skagway, Anchorage, and Mt. McKinley, as well as helicopter trips over ice fields. Dunc mentioned that Ed and Molly Scheu and members of their family had flown to Alaska in Ed's plane a week or so earlier. While there the Scheus visited with Lowell Thomas Jr. and camped at Mt. McKinley.
Received a nice letter in early September from Obe Obermayer. A long-time resident of Arlington, Va., Obe edited and published the Northern Virginia Sun, a daily newspaper in Arlington, for 27 years, selling it in 1988. Last year he was a professor of journalism at the University of Maryland. What is especially interesting is that in August Obe conducted the first seminar in practical publications management to be held in Eastern Europe. Holding forth in Warsaw, Poland, Obe felt that he "had a privilege similar to being in Philadelphia in 1776." Among the seminar's "firsts": the first time since WWII that Eastern Europe publishing executives were taught business and marketing strategies in their home country; the first time a group of newspaper and publishing house business managers met together to exchange ideas and experiences; the first survey of the specific needs and problems of Polish publishers in the areas of finance, administration, marketing, and distribution; and the first time an Eastern European journalism organization has sponsored a meeting to study "non-journalist subjects" like advertising, marketing, and budgeting.
Graham Brush, now "retired" in New Preston, Conn., is currently in the real estate business fighting the mini-recession. No doubt he's very ready to help you buy or move large estates, or small ones for that matter!
On a sad note I must report the death of George Carr. Sincerest condolences to his wife, Andy, and to the other family members.
