In this winter of shortages it is refreshing to find out that the Class of '54 has not run out of words or writing equipment. I really should preface this column with words of gratitude to our great Class Treasurer Dick Barker who forwards me the notes that you so willingly write on the back of your dues notices. Please keep sending those words of wisdom along with the money to Dick. Keep up the good work, Mr. Barker!

Marriages are in the news this month led by a writeup in the Winter Park, Florida Sun Herald about Peter Robinson and his new bride, Dee Ellen Beynon to quote, "Make a match, lose a secretary" ... that's what happened when Senator Walter Simms introduced Peter Robinson to Dee Ellen Beynon, called Deb for her initials. Deb was the Senator's Secretary. She met Peter, and that was that." Peter and Deb are making their home at Laurel Hills Apartments in Pine Hills, Winter Park, where Peter is employed by Laurel Hills Homes.

Bill Madden writes that his first wife passed away this past year and that he was married again on October 6 to Janice L. Basden of Columbia, Conn. Bill and Janice make their home at Winding Brook Way, Holmdel, N.J.

After 19 years of not seeing or hearing from Phil Kaiser, it seems that his name turns up almost every month this year. We first reported on Phil this past spring when he was made vice president and general merchandise manager of Gayfer's, a division of the Mercantile Stores. Shortly afterward, Phil was moved to New York as general merchanidse manager of Mercantile Stores Company, a national chain of department stores. This past month it was announced in the Wall Street Journal that Phil has been appointed president of the Lion Dry Goods Division of Mercantile Stores. This position was held until recently by the man who has now been appointed as president of the total Mercantile Stores Company. It looks like Phil is following in the right foot steps! I assume Phil and Kay will continue to live in their new home in Summit, N.J., which they just moved into during the past year. Good Luck Phil! We need some good retailers in the Class!

Bill Petty has been elected president of Associates Marketing Services, South Bend, Ind. The firm has over 1,000 offices throughout the U.S. and Canada and assets of over two billion dollars, and has interests in consumer and commercial finance as well as insurance and related services. Bill joined it in 1969 as vice president, marketing, after more than a decade with Procter and Gamble of Cincinnati, where he also served as president of the Dartmouth Club.

Textron has chosen a '54 as director of corporate development. Bradford Borden has taken over responsibility for the company's acquisition program, according to a release from Providence. He has been with Textron since 1968 and was an officer of Citizens Bank in Providence before that. Previous jobs had been with General Radio in Massachusetts and with Shell Chemical in New York. The Bordens, include wife Judy and Andrea, 13 and Sarah, 11.

As long as we're discussing tycoons, it would be a good time to go back to the Hanover scene for news of our own Hanover tycoon Dick Fowler. Dartmouth Savings Bank recently announced that Dick has been elected a trustee of the Bank. This position has added to Dick's of importance - president-treasurer of the Dartmouth Cooperative Society; director of Universal Tool Company; director of Dartmouth Skiis, Inc. In addition to being so important to all these companies. Dick is surrounded by beautiful women - Posy and his three daughters! What better way to live in Hanover! More words from the hiways and biways of commerce. Received a note from Luke Case. “In February this year went back to manufacturing - took over a small shop that Lamson and Sessions was closing down. We can set you up with a complete manufacturing unit for cold impact extrusion, design and/or build a machine for you, automate your present operations, and generally help companies to save money. After four weeks with absolutely no prospective employees sent out from the employment bureau, I must assume that everyone in Cleveland has a job. We're now going out for some university students, full or part time.” I would think Luke, that you'd better automate your shop first! Good luck!

News from the North! Dick - "Rough Dog" _ Lewis has taken time out to thaw out his Maine of humor and writes that he is busy being a "gentleman" farmer - a term which I think partially describes him - and parttime lobster fisherman in addition to being in charge of the Portland office of Ernst and Ernst. Dick, Audrey, and their three kids went to the Holy Cross, game and then visited with his former roommate. Dick Kolbe and his wife Jo Ann in Hanover where, as you know, Dick is spending the first semester as a visiting professor in government.

While Dick was playing around in Hanover, red Short was keeping his nose to the grind Stone at Peat, Marwick, Mitchell and Company Where he is a principal. Ted writes that he's been transferred to Chicago to direct the firms, "Public Sector" Management Consulting Practice. in the Midwest. I guess some accountants count and some accountants farm.

Our last remaining member of the State Department, Bill Mansfield, is on assignment from the State Department to the Environmental Protection Agency. Bill directs the Agency's bilateral cooperative program, such as the U.S.-Soviet environmental Agreement, U.S.-Canadian Mexican, and other country activities. Bill writes that it's a new area in foreign affairs so there's lots of room for new initiatives. It sounds to us like a big job trying to keep the world clean. Our blessings to you. Bill!

Sneaking of cleaning up the world, Don Belcher is still involved in a research project in rural health sponsored by U.C.L.A. and the Ghana Medical School. Don, Sheila and their three children have been living in Accra, Ghana, for some time where Don is putting his medical education to work for the benefit of the emerging countries.

Well, that about does it for this month from my good old New England enclave. Keep the news pouring in, the wood on the fire, and above all keep the faith!
