Many of us recently endured our first summer without a blissful three-month summer vacation. This summer didn't include enough lazy afternoons at the beach, enough battle on the tennis court, and not nearly enough trips to the casino (or wherever you hung out during summer break). Although we didn't consume quite as much Coppertone as we did in previous Julys, some '86s managed to sneak in a respectable amount of relaxation and adventure. Take Rudy Scarito. For those that have never ventured into NYC, Rudy verifies that, relative to Hanover, there is a fair amount happening in Manhattan. Her job has been "soft" this summer, allowing her to begin frolicking while at least some lawabiding New Yorkers are still awake. Rudy was not one to close the party at Dartmouth, but now she is occasionally taken by a surge of adrenalin that whisks her through the night to the morning rush hour. She has enjoyed the big city beat but still makes many forays into quieter places. One such excursion took her to Betsy Crawford's wedding. Betsy recently joined forces with Bill Ragan '82, older brother of Maureen. Maureen must accept some blame for bringing Betsy into the family, as she introduced the two back at Dartmouth. Maureen's honing her music skills in our music department.

Watch what you say to Harry Carrel. Although not as diabolical as an average CIA spy, Harry is a snooper. Our classmate applies his fact-gathering skills to uncover corporate secrets from unsuspecting knuckleheads like you and me. Also be wary of phone calls from Suzanne Brennan, who works for the same NYC firm. Make no mistake, our classmates are no bandits, just resourceful investigators. Harry didn't subject himself to many afternoons under the blazing sun, but he did enjoy summer retreats to Niagara Falls and Maine.

One '86 who really got around is PaulAsel. Our hearty friend began the summer hiking in Glacier National Park with MikeCollins, then finished the summer cycling through Iceland with Jim Gill (is kayaking in Antarctica next?). In between workouts he moved to San Francisco where he continues drawing paychecks from Merrill Lynch. Mike is at Tuck; Jim is with the Shawmut Bank in Boston.

Gary Clark put a few miles on his soles this summer, too. Gary took a stroll between Georgia and Maine on the Appalachian Trail, a six-month journey.

Christina Porche wonders if her recent accomplishments and activities merit a few words in the class notes. Admittedly, it is a borderline case. Our usual stringent standards (i.e., mention on the AP wire or in the Guinness Book of World Records) will be relaxed for Christina. Our friend was confronted with the problem of selecting from amongst a slew of scholarships and fellowships. She settled on the political science program at LSU, where she is in her second year. Her summer adventure was memorable, though not as grueling as that of other 'B6s. Christina spent several weeks in Berlin where she lived with a family which had recently emigrated from Eastern Europe. While on the continent she met up with Emmeram von Braun.

Praise be to Jack Martin for relaying news about himself and his pals. Jack is working in Boston for a public housing advocacy organization. He shares his own housing with Raoul Socher, who works for the Putnam Mutual Fund. Ben Clements completed his first year at Cornell law school and worked during the summer in a NYC law firm. When he returns to Cornell Ben will begin working for the Cornell Law Review. JohnFendig worked in Washington as a paralegal and is currently attending William and Mary law school. After spending four years serving one of the best beer markets in America, Cam Johnson is tapping the suds market in Binghamton, N.Y. David Hess is living in a barn in the Baltimore area where he is sculptor. He is sorry that he missed the great era of nude sculpture; he laments that modern models are more often tangled steel than supple skin. David has found a way to keep things interesting: rather than sculpting nudes he sculpts in the nude.

Late breaking news: sources report that Bob Rech recently married Dolly Belmar, a graduate in economics from U.Va. Bob and Dolly are both in the loan officer development program for Irving Trust in NYC.
