Foundation & Corporate Relations
OCTOBER • 1987

In 1987, 114 foundations and 750 corporations contributed over $9 million to Dartmouth. A record $1.9 million in corporate matching gifts was also received in support of capital projects, faculty and student research, financial aid, and operating support for departments and schools.

THE YEAR'S HIGHLIGHTS

• Charles A. Dana Foundation pledge payment of $153,000 toward the Dartmouth-Dana Language Collaborative, which will bring outside faculty to Dartmouth for training in the Rassias method and provide technical support for language instruction at the College.

• General Motors Foundation pledge of $1 million as a leadership gift to the Tuck School building program.

• The Pew Memorial Trust completion of a $700,000 pledge to provide classroom equipment throughout the College.

• The Kresge Foundation payment of a $900,000 pledge to establish the Kresge Fitness Center in Dartmouth's new Berry Sports Center.

ELECTRONIC MUSIC

Dartmouth's Bregman Electronic Music Studio, the most advanced classroom laboratory of its kind in the country, relies on a $404,000 Synclavier Digital Audio System given by New England Digital Corporation and other gifts from the Apple Corporation, Neotek Corporation, and Casio, Inc. The generosity of these corporations contributed to a major expansion and relocation of the studio during the past year.

ELECTRON MICROSCOPY

The Julius A. and Fannie Rippel 1923 Electron Micro-scope Facility at the Dartmouth Medical School was established this year through a handsome gift of $405,505 from the Fannie E. Rippel Foundation.

1987 was a good year. Major pledge commitments payable over the next several years and a number of exciting proposals under consideration promise more good years to come as the College strengthens its already excellent relationship with the corporation and foundation community —without whose generosity the quality of a Dartmouth education might be compromised.
