One month after the coup, and ES-D Toolin is still safely ensconced in a dark corner of Morningside Park. And I'm safely ensconced, well, right here. But ensconced with integrity, of course.
So this month I was hiding out in the upper-right desk drawer, next to the whiteout, and the phone rang, and it was PatBerry. Pat, who so far has failed to introduce me to Ally Sheedy, is busy-busy these days. She's editor of Thundercats magazine, a quarterly showcase for promising young literary talent, and senior editor of Splice, an ultra-liberal political journal. Now, "Lion-O" has been named editor of MickeyMouse quarterly, which, of course, is the controversial but supremely respected gazette of the rodent-study field. Anyway, Pat, who as your Alumni Council representative has been working day and night to supply the College with an acceptable alma mater, says a lot of people have been married this summer. Unfortunately, she couldn't remember the names of any of their husbands so that news will have to wait.
That would have been enough excitement for one afternoon, but then HowardMorse called to report his betrothal. Howard is in D.C., an associate with Arnold & Porter. Laura Loeb, the betrothee, also is a legal type, working for the Congressional Caucus on Women's Issues.
Speaking of former award-winning D journalists, there is a package sitting here (How? Why?) from Greg Fossedal, now a media fellow at Stanford's Hoover Institute. It seems Greg was named one of Harper & Row's 70 top journalists of 1986, with a three-star rating. This actually is a very good thing if you're a journalist. I think I have one star, maybe. Anyway, Greg has attached a letter to the effect that three stars is okay but not good enough, and that he's gunning for four big ones this year. "Please forward your suggestions for improving my work," he asks. Greg also is the author, with Dinesh D'Souza, of My Dear Alex, a propaganda thriller that has been endorsed by Richard Nixon.
Also in the pile: a note from Lynne HamelGuadet, unfortunately addressed to the has-been ES-D. Lynne is assistant director of Alumni Affairs at the College; Bob is entering his fifth season as assistant hockey coach. Not only that, Lynne enclosed a hockey ticket announcing the birth of son Joseph Robert on May 29. Lynne and Bob believe in very large children, future Bonecrushing defensemen: Joseph Robert weighed in at close to 11 lbs.
Also: a random note from Jeff Walters, who has nothing better to do while hiking the Tetons then send postcards to, yes, her. The Tetons look very beautiful in the picture, and Jeff writes, "Wow!" which translated, means, "The Tetons are beautiful." Jeff also reports that Rick Kracoff has abandoned his L.A. law firm to start his own: Korshak and Kracoff. Jeff is just sitting there, waiting for me to make some libelous remark about Rick and L.A. Law and entertainment lawyers, but I'm not going to.
Outta space, and so soon, too. Lotsa news on the Greenstein beat, but that'll keep. It may even get better.
