Ravine Lodge rituals, such as meals served on tennis rackets and food throwing, no longer await freshman trekkers. "We don't want to be harsh on the freshmen," a Dartmouth Outing Club member told a visiting reporter. Instead, there was an effort to have fun, eighties-style. "People are having a better time now than four years ago," an upperclassman dressed as a chicken told a visitor. "They're laughing; they're not getting food smeared in their hair."

Some things don't change. Songs composed by weary trekkers are still irreverent. One ditty directed at President Freedman included the line "Hey, James O., you should have hiked with us."

On the other hand, the DOC chose not to sing either version of the alma mater.
