Steve Bosworth, who has done such a splendid and high visibility job as our nation's ambassador to the Philippines, is resigning, effective this month (April), according to Charlie Buffon.

Charlie said Steve was not yet ready - when this was written in mid-February - to say what he would be doing. Those of us who are news junkies watched Steve become a familiar face on American television - most recently praising the vote on a new Philippine constitution.

With his strong support of the new democracy there, he played no small role in the success of that vote, and I am certain that Steve will make his way into the book of Philippine history as a midwife to democracy. And as Americans, we say thank you.

EARTHQUAKE: Meanwhile, Charlie says, Jake Gillespie took his office into his home, literally, after an earthquake destroyed the U.S. Embassy in San Salvador. So for weeks after the quake, the U.S. Information Agency operated in El Salvador from Jake's home. Charlie says Jake was in the embassy when the quake hit, and that he has one of the first people to go back inside after the quaking stopped.

NEW POST: Rod Plimpton has been elected a vice president of Temple, Barker and Sloane, Inc., a general management consulting firm based in Lexington, Mass.

Rod, who has been with the firm since 1982, was credited in a press release with playing "a pivotal role in the development of the firm's organization analysis practice." Before joining that firm, Rod had his own consulting firm, Organization Consulting Services, Inc., and was a member of the faculty of the Amos Tuck School of Business. After graduating, he got an M.B.A. from Tuck and a Ph.D. from the Stanford Graduate School of Business.

MARRIED: Robert Edward Shearer to Margaret Ann Murdich, a lawyer, on December 27, 1986 at Scarsdale (N.Y.) Congregational Church. The New York Times account noted that the new Mrs. Shearer likes to be known as Peggy Ann, and said she is deputy general counsel of Home Group Inc., an insurance holding company. The story went on to say that Shearer is currently a senior programmer and analyst at the New York University Computer Center. It said he also was a candidate for a doctorate in higher education at NYU, to go with earlier master's degrees in business administration from the University of Chicago and in biology from NYU. Congratulations.

And, if this keeps up, we'll have to have a standing subhead: Married, just like classes 20-25 years our junior. Remember it was just last month that we reported the marriage of Art Kelton to Elaine White. Now what about the baby derby?
