Hats off to "Our Dan"! Our leader always, in, and after, college days. Albert Emerson Hadlock A.B. passed his eighty-first birthday, February 9! Sound in soul and body. Long may he wave! When it comes to a consideration of age, in spite of our great sorrow in the loss of four, within a brief period, there are 2i grads and non-grads still surviving. Few classes, if any, have as large a percentage of survivors after 56 years. Your secretary estimates that at least ninety per cent of our living men are physically sound. It seems conceivable that we may produce a crop of centenarians, and possess that great prize, "the oldest living graduate."
Have received a precious letter from winfred Ross, the proprietor of the celebrated "Ross Bookmakers." He affirms that, "I have long felt that our class was the finest that Dartmouth ever produced. 'Not a crook in the class,' said Jim Johnson. And morally it has been superior, intellectually and in achievement, circumstances ideal for the realization of Horace's dream:— Di, probos mores docili juventae,Di, senectute placidae quietem."
Conn and his son Dwight '14 are basking in Florida sunshine, at the Princess Martha Hotel, St. Petersburg. Dr. Sanborn paints a domestic picture that has a honeymoon color. He writes, "My seventy-ninth birthday found Mrs, S. and myself able to be around with daily tasks. We both work at 37 Arlington St. (Cambridge), so as to have our beds made and our dishes washed. Every day I spend about six hours at Sanborn Company's medical and war plant. We buy bonds and pay income taxes,—but Oh Boyl—how little we suffer from this war!" He makes an admirable suggestion that each of us send a birthday letter to classmates on their natal date. The addresses may be found in the Fiftieth Anniversary book.
It is also suggested that we encourage donations, in our wills; such bequests to be known as the "Class of '87 Memorial Fund." This plan would empower the trustees to use income "for scholarships, or loans for students in the college, or for such other purposes as may be designated."
