Two columns ago, I listed a number of our classmates with respect to whom the Alumni Affairs Office has been trying to establish locations. One of them was Alfred M. Southey Jr. Pete Brown, who operates his own construction company in Clearwater, Fla., reports that Al was an ex-Marine from Bridgeport, Conn., and that he is believed to have died in an automobile accident on Route 5 near Windsor, Vt., in 1948 or 1949, while still a student. Perhaps some other member of the class can verify Pete's best recollection, because evidently there has been an omission in the records of the Alumni Office. Pete has been occupied with raising $25 million for the new Thayer School facilities on Tuck Mall. He joyfully reports that groundbreaking is scheduled this fall.
Just about a week or so after a fellow member of the Olympic Club in San Francisco transmitted to me the regards of Dick Moersch, I received the happy tidings from Burt Proom that Dick would serve as regional class agent for Region O, comprising northern California, northern Nevada, Washington, Oregon, Arizona and western Canada. Dick is a practicing medical doctor in San Bernardino, Calif., who displays his athletic talent on the golf links, with great acclaim.
It is timely to convey the fact that our class Alumni Fund goal for 1987 is $89,000. A further goal is 64 percent participation. As of March 5, Burt had indications of reaching 55 percent of the dollar objective, but states that participation was only 25 percent. That's particularly regrettable because Dartmouth always has excelled at alumni participation in donations to the Alumni Fund. Let's pull up our socks and make both goals by June 15.
Incidentally, for this part of the world, Charlie Fay, who is operating private schools in Corona, Calif., serves as an assistant class agent to Dick.
Punchy Thomas telephoned me on his very last day of active duty with the Continental Baking Company in Rye, N.Y., exulting in the prospects of a 30-day automobile trip with Doris to Florida and several other southeastern states. Punch expected to visit Herb Gramstorff and DekeJackson. He is directing once again our mini-reunion in the fall. It takes place this year on the weekend of October 30 and 31. As always, a block of rooms has been reserved for class members at the Holiday Inn in White River Junction. Please notify Punch as swiftly as possible of your intent to attend. I plan on doing so and look forward to living it up for a few days in Hanover.
In March, a cadre of stalwart Dartmouth types successfully organized the first ever Dartmouth Club of Sacramento, with a luncheon meeting and speaker from the College at a restaurant in Old Sacramento. Among those attending was Bob Stewart, who matriculated with us in July 1945. Bob accelerated and graduated with the class of 1948, to which he now gives allegiance, while recalling with sentiment that famous "summer of '45." Bob is associated with the Atlantic Richfield Company in Sacramento.
