Alumni returning to Hanover in the spring will be greeted by several of the College's eternal verities: the air will be sweet, Baker's bells will be ringing, and the students will be talking funny.

This dictionary is offered as a remedy to foster communication between Greeners young and old. To some, the list might be reassuring: a few of the terms have survived decades of use and abuse. A GUT, for example, remains an easy course. People still BOOGIE, a ROADTRIP is a roadtrip and 'SHMEN spring eternal.

Nonetheless, an ALUM who does not wish to get HOSED or look like LUNCHMEAT had best start GEEKING.

airmail (n): an empty Hinman Box (see HB).

alum (n): someone who knows the words to all the College songs.

B&J's (n): Ben and Jerry's ice cream, sold at Topside.

bake (v): 1. to put oneself in a drug-induced state. 2. to study in Baker library.

boogie (v): to dance uninhibitively.

bridge jump (v): to hurl oneself off the Ledyard Bridge.

B.P. (n): beautiful person; derogatory term for a member of the social elite.

CC (n): conception control, closet (n): a small single room in a dormitory.

clueless (adj): one who is without basic knowledge or awareness. "All 'shmen areclueless."

Cos' (n): "The Cosby Show."

Chuckies (n): Converse hightop sneakers that bear the name of ex-athlete Chuck Taylor.

crank (v): to TOOL or GEEK.

crib (v): to take a nap.

ding (v): 1. to discard something or someone. 2. to reject a job applicant or someone rushing a Greek organization. "I just gotdinged by P&G."

face plant (n): a fall in skiing or snowshoeing.

flag (v): to fail an exam.

foofy (adv): showy; unconventional.

geek (n): see TOOL, glom (v): to kiss ardently or "make out."

golden (adj, adv): a pleased exclamation. "Golden!"

go off (v): 1. to criticize harshly. 2. to party strenuously.

green card (n): student identification.

gut (n): an extremely easy course.

hang (v): to waste time or loiter. "We just hung lastnight."

HB (n): Hinman Box; a student mailbox in the ground floor of the Hopkins Center.

hosed (adj): a.state of failure. "I got hosed on that mathexam."

jam (v): 1. to participate intensely; to do well. "Ijammed on my them midterm."

2. to eat prodigiously.

jock (n): someone who is intensely interested in an activity. "He is a computer jock."

kicked (adj): exhausted, empty, gone. "Once the kegwas kicked, so was the party."

lineup: (n): NBC's television comedy programs on Thursday nights from 8 to 10, including COS', "Family Ties," "Cheers," and "Night Court." "I punted mypaper to watch the lineup."

lunchmeat (n): a worthless, despicable or pitiful person; a nerd.

Mac (n): a Macintosh computer.

mange (v): to gorge oneself.

max (adj): wonderful; amazing; intense. "That was a maxparty!"

min (adj): horrendous; awful. "That was min when hespilled beer on the po."

motivate (v): to exit a room; to leave.

mung (11): the sticky, smelly coat of film that covers a frat basement's floor following a party.

pie (adj) attractive; beautiful. Used only in the form, "That girl is pie."

pinhead (n): a video game addict.

po (n): campus police.

preemie (n): pre-med; a student preparing for medical school.

punch (n): meal plan for freshmen at Thayer.

punt (v): to put off work.

rack (v): to go to sleep.

random (n): an unfamiliar or uninvited guest; a non-Dartmouth student.

rerack (v): to go back to sleep.

rebel (n): a resident of the River Cluster dormitories.

roadtrip (n): an educational excursion to another college or city to experience new cultural stimulation.

scam (v): to regard members of the opposite sex; to SCOPE.

scope (v): see SCAM. Usually performed in Thayer or a second-floor window on Mass Row.

scream (n): ice cream 'shmen (n): freshmen. See CLUELESS.

sleeze (v): to curry favor. "He sleezed his professor tokeep from getting hosed."

slug (n): a person who spends life RACKING and RERACKING.

smooth (adj): well-dressed; relatively formal. "SeniorTails will be a semi-smoothparty."

sproutsy (adj): like a vegetarian.

super suck (n): a central vacuum cleaner found in dorms.

tails (n): cocktails.

tease (n): a prospective student.

Thayer layer (n): adipose tissue that builds up on freshmen after several months of campus dining.

Ted (n): a nerd. See LUNCHMEAT.

tool (n): one who studies feverishly.

Tuckie (n): a Tuck student.

Tucktails (n): cocktails with an MBA.

uni (n): uniform; outrageous costume. "What a foofy uni!"

W&C (n): wine and cheese; a tasteful party.
