By the time this column reaches you, the April daffodils will be a fond memory and summer will be here, bringing to mind the Alumni Fund. Before I get to class news, I wanted to thank the class for its excellent Fund showing as of April: we're well ahead of prior years in participation and giving. Those who haven't contributed, please consider a gift.
Dave Loring, remembering his (most appreciated) stint in the secretary's chair, sent along a clipping from Yankee Homes chronicling the exploits of Dan Butterworth. An enterprising marionette maker, Dan was living in a small home in Newport, R.I., when his shop outgrew his home. Dan and his wife Beverly, an artist, bought a barn in Pascoag, R.I., and took a summer off to build an upstairs apartment and a downstairs studio. Now Dan can drive a truckload of materials right into the studio. With the addition of full-time staff and a baby girl, they again feel the need to expand and are renovating the original farmhouse on their property. Very creative, Dan, but why a job with so many strings attached?
Just last week, Lora and I were reminiscing about college days. I wondered out loud what had become of my junior year roommate, Roy Landy, the only person I ever knew who could relax all term, then pull together a 50-page thesis on Middle East history which would make the State Department envious. The next day, a clipping arrived announcing Roy's engagement to Barbara Thomas, a beautiful Hofstra graduate employed at Maritime Realty in New York. Roy went on from Dartmouth to Princeton for a master's degree and on to Hofstra for a law degree. He is currently a vice president with Drexel Burnham Lambert.
You will recall that a few months ago I was sleuthing out the activities of the Joneses. Today I caught up with another: Greg Jones, professor of communications at Hampshire College. Greg completed a Ph.D. at U. Mass with an interest in TV production and media criticism. He enjoys Hampshire, where the low student to faculty ratio and excellent video production facilities allow for the unleashing of student creativity. Greg's wife, Erica, is also an academic working as administrative assistant to the president of Smith College.
Returning to the lost but not forgotten group, who knows where Terry DiFilippo, Jonathan Doll, Jim Duncan, and Greg Fetler are hanging their hats nowadays?
